Re: Read only access to word files on intranet

Sorry Ben - been away for a couple days.

I am logged on to the server itself as Administrator and have installed MS
Word as well.

The folders have a grey Read-Only tick, but the files have not. As for NTFS
permissions, both Administrator and Administrators have full
control/read/write/read&execute/modify access.

Opening the file, MS Word has (Read Only) in the title bar, and File/Save
calls the Save As dialog box. Trying to save it as the same name results in
"this file is read-only..." error.

Aloha ut,

If you log onto the server and use Windows Explorer to view the folder where
the files reside I'm betting it's on an NTFS-formatted drive. Have you checked
the NTFS permissions on the folder/files?

I gave 'everyone' full access in the share - no change. I unticked
R/O on the Inetpub folder on the server and it baulked at the first
Word file several levels down, with 'Access denied'.

BTW, I am using a isolated test rig, and logged on as Administrator.

Someone else suggested I use Sharepoint, but that is way over the top
for what I want to do.

Cheers,

Aloha ut,

Sounds like a permissions issue to me. Have you checked both the
Share AND NTFS permissions for the files/folders in question?

Yes, but it is greyed out. If I cycle through to 'not ticked' and
click 'apply' it changes until properties is next viewed. Normally,
if a change like this made, you can see it running through the
folder and sub-folders - this doesn't happen.

Aloha ut,

If you go to the folder those files are in with Windows Explorer,
right-click the files (or the folders they are in) are they marked
with the Read-Only attribute?

I have a small intranet on SBS2003 with IIS6 that contains a list
of MS Word files. I have 2 users with full access rights to
these files, but when they open them in MS Word they open as "Read
Only" (in the title bar) and cannot be saved. "Save" is greyed
out, but they can be Saved As somethiong else.

Is there some way of getting around this?
