RE: HTTP 404 errors

Hi Crina,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I neglected to report that we have only one
(1) NIC (network Interface Card) in our configuration. This configuration,
as I understand, does not alow the Firewall server in SBS2003 to be utilized
and therefore we must configure our router (2wire) to perform that function.
We could be experiencing problems with our router configuration, but at this
point we need to be sure that we have a working web page (companyweb) to
connect to, so that we can isolate the problem.
I have verified as many of the steps outlined in your reply that are
possible, with our configuration, and I still am not able to bring up the
"Company Web Page" or to list the backup results in the "Server
Management-Backup" program or to list the data in the "Server
Management-Monitoring and Reporting program. As I mentioned previously, the
Backup program is functioninng properly, but the part that lists the results
of the backups is not working,
I Companyweb:
Server Error In "/" Application
The resource cannot be found
HTTP 404
Requested URL: /default.aspx
Server Management -Backup - Monitoring and Reporting
The page cannot be found
HTTP 400 Bad Request
I could not verify Line 2. , sub 2) (Right Click Monitoring and select
Properties). I see no "Monitoring" line in my window?
I have been trying to locate the source of the "Company Web Page", but
so far I can't find it. I have looked in C:\Inetpub\Companyweb\, but there
was nothing there, should "default.aspx" be here? I have not intentionally
deleted any files after installing SBS2003 Premium SP1 or during the
initilization process.
Still need lots of help!

Hi Norman,.
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand you receive "HTTP 400 - Bad Request"
errors when you access Companyweb and access "monitoring and reporting" and
Backup pages on the Server Management Console. If I have misunderstood your
concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Firstly, please check if the resolution in the following Knowledge Base
article helps:
842693 You receive a "HTTP 400 - Bad Request" error message when you try to
use the Monitoring and Reporting snap-in or the Backup snap-in on a Windows
Small Business Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=842693
If it does not work, regarding companyweb, please check the following:
I. Please check in DNS and see if there is a CNAME alias for Companyweb in
the Forward lookup Zone.
1. On the SBS server, bring up the DNS console by running dnsmgmt.msc.
2. Expand ''Server name'' '' ''Forward Lookup Zones'' '' ''your domain
name'', is there a Alias (CNAME) record for companyweb in the right pane?
If so, ensure the ''FQDN for target host'' option is setting to the FQDN
name of your SBS server, such as sbs2k3.domain.local.
II. In IIS, make sure that Companyweb is listening on the 444 port on every
network interface on your SBS server and the permission. To do so, please
follow the steps below:
1. Open IIS.
2. Right-click Companyweb and then click Properties.
3. Click Advanced in the Web Site tab.
4. Click to select the entry that includes SSL port 444, and then click
Edit.
5. Make sure that we choose " (All Unassigned)" in the IP address list.
6. Click OK to close the open windows.
7. Click the "Directory Security" tab.
8. In the "Authentication and access control" section, click the Edit
button.
9. Make sure only the following boxes are checked:
Integrated Windows authentication
10. Click OK.
11. In the "IP address and domain restrictions" section, click the Edit
button.
12. Make sure "Granted access" is selected and there are no items in the
list box.
13. Click OK.
14. Click the "Documents" tab and make sure "Enable default content page"
is select and the following items are listed in order:
Default.htm
Default.asp
index.htm
Default.aspx
If any items are missing, please add them and make them the correct order.
15. Click Start->Run, type "iisreset" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK. Then check if it works.
Regarding the "monitoring and reporting" snap-in in the SBS 2k3 server
management fails to work, actually there are many factors that can lead to
this problem. Here I would suggest you start from the general
troubleshooting plan:
Would you please check the following information to see if the problem can
be resolved?
1. Check the Properties of the Default Web Site as following:
1) Expand Advanced Management | Internet Information Services | Server Name
| Web Sites.
2) Right click Default Web Sites and select Properties.
3) In Web Site tab, make sure you have selected the All Unassigned in IP
address of Web site identification column.
2. Check the properties of Monitoring as following:
1) Expand Advanced Management | Internet Information Services | Server Name
| Web Sites | Default Web Sites.
2) Right click Monitoring and select Properties.
3) In Directory Security tab, click Edit in Authentication and access
control column.
4) Make sure you have checked Integrated Windows authentication.
5) Click Edit in IP address and domain name restriction.
6) Select Granted access.
3. Ensure that the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING service is started.
4. Make sure IIS_WPG, Local Service and Network Service accounts have Read
& Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read permissions to
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322.
Ensure IIS_WPG, Local Service and Network Service accounts have Full
Control permission to
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files.
5. Run "iisreset" and then check if the issuer still occurs.
Regarding the backup snap-in in the SBS 2k3 server management fails to
work, it may be caused by the following:
1. The task "Back Up Small Business Server" is deleted manually from
Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks. We may solve it from the following:
If you do not want SBS to backup the server, please re-run Backup
Configuration Wizard (Server Management -> Backup -> Configure Backup) and
select "Do not use Small Business Server backup". If you want the backup,
then select "Change existing backup settings" to let the wizard to recreate
the task.
2. The service running the backup was set to a user account instead of
System. The website ran as Network Service. Network Service and the user
account had different date/international format settings. To resolve this
issue we set the backup job to run as System which had the same date format
as the Network Service. Additionally, the dates contained in the Backup
Results.xml needed to be changed to match the date format of the Network
Service, which was the US format.
Steps to check the service account:
1) Click Start, point to Control Panel, point to Scheduled Tasks.
2) Under the lists of Tasks, right click "Back Up Small Business Server"
and select Properties
If the problem still persists, let's re-run the CEICW to ensure the
Monitoring and Backup and Companyweb virtual directory is properly
configured. To do so:
1. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.
2. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.
3. Choose not to change the connection type and click Next. On the Firewall
page, select "Enable firewall" and click Next.
4. On the "Services Configuration" page, select all the items and then
click Next.
5. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, make sure "Allow access to the
entire Web site from the Internet" is selected. If you select "Allow access
to only the following Web site services from the Internet", make sure
Windows SharePoint Services intranet site,OWA and RWW are selected. Click
Next.
6. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public FQDN or public IP of SBS.
7. Go through the remaining steps.
After performing the steps, if it still does not work, please help me to
confirm some information:
1. What settings you have configured before they do not work?
2. Can you click Browse to access them on IIS?
If you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please feel
free to let me know.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)
