Re: Default directories....

Thanks,
I can't seem to get the link to work, but the question really was more
rhetorical/wishful.
Back in the day (I date back to paper tape and punch cards...), it was
drummed into our heads that the volume that contained the OS should contain
ONLY the OS... Data and programs should be on another
slice/partition/spindle, as should swap space. Sometime/somewhere that
philosophy seems to have gotten lost, still... old habits die hard, and I
really dislike the idea of any account or process accessing the OS partition
other than the OS itself.
Windows seems to install EVERYthing by default to the C: Drive.... and I
just wish that there was a simple way, during initial install, to have
non-kernel files located onto a separate partition or drive spindle. :::
sigh :::

Dear Customer,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!
As I know, you can change the location of some components when you set up
SBS server. Also many programs can let you select the location when you
install them.
After installing, you can also use this document to move Data Folders of
SBS from c drive to other drive:

| This is a general question that came up again when working with SBS
2003.
| Is there any way (and if not, why not?) to have default directories
point
to
| volumes other than C:?
|
| For example, the default profile and program directories are always
| generated in the C: drive. Ancillary MS applets are also installed here
as
| well.
|
| I really don't like keeping anything on the system volume other than
the
OS
| itself. Is there a way at install time to have these set to D: or E: or
..
|
| I know it's hard to 'hard code' these to other locations since MS has no
way
| of knowing what drive letters are really available, but we should at
least
| have the OPTION of using a different volume.
|
| Perhaps a "wizard", post-install, to relocate these critical
directories,
| and update the registry for all currently installed apps. Manually
updating
| the registry is an option that I take, but I really don't like it, and I
am
| never sufficiently confident to move the files that are placed in the
| C:\Program Files during initial system installation, which always leaves
at
| least some 'trash' behind..
|
| I know this can not and will not address mis-behaved applications that
are
| hard-coded, but that should not be a reason for not having the option.
|
