Nothing I read or heard from PSS seemed specific to any one controller brand
or model.

Dave,

Any particular brand of controller causing problems?

Interesting. I had a PSS call about some Exchange database corruption.
The support rep said that the controllers are almost always implicated in
this, and that they have a really tough time convincing the customers
because other file access, etc. is normal. Apparently the Exchange
stores are more susceptible to this than the file system in general, and
the problems are incredibly difficult to diagnose since often, nothing
shows up in event logs, diagnostics, or elsewhere.

Well, I'm glad it seems to be solved.

Well, it wasn't quite "solved" after all. The serevr started hanging
again about 24 hours
later.
It turned out that the controller was mucking up the store. I have a
spare identical
machine,
so I moved the hard drives over, moved the store files (35 GB!) to
another directory,
mounted
empty stores to get the users back online, performed the usual recovery
on the corrupted
stores (eseutil, isinteg, etc.), exmerged the temporary stores into the
recovered stores,
moved
them into place, mounted them, and all is fine now.

This caused some consternation about availability that I'll discuss in
another thread.
