I currently managethe computers in our church. We have been using
peer-to-peer networking after a horrible experience with another
company's product. The problem is 9 computers talking on a
peer-to-peer is bogging down the system (to say the least). I am
considering going to SBS 2003 (possibly premium). My question is -
will the server I put it on, curently running Windows XP Pro, be
completely overwritten when I install the software? (The server is
designed as a server but when I dumped the software aforementioned, I
just installed XP pro.) The computer I want to use meets all
requirements. It only has one network card - do I need to installl
another and run the high speed internet through it instead of the
open network?
One last question - will my current configuaton of router/switch by
linksys be sufficient? Thanks Dan Mefford, Associate Pastor

If you're going to use Premium, you should use ISA which requires two NICs.
IF you're not going to use ISA, don't get Premium (unless you need SQL). I
don't use Premium; I use Std and a single NIC and a good external firewall
(not a consumer grade NAT box like Linksys). I like Sonicwalls, but others
prefer Watchguards, or PIX....your choice, but get something good.

If you've never done an SBS install before, set up a test box and install it
a couple of times to make sure you know how to do it - and follow all the
wizards.

Make sure the hardware specs include redundant drives (I like hardware SCSI
RAID) and at least 1GB RAM - preferably 2.

Make sure all your workstations are running either WinXP Pro SP2 or Win2k
Pro SP4 (ideally XP Pro)

Get good centrally managed antivirus software - I like Trend's suite of
products, the Client/Server/Messaging Security suite.

Get a good backup routine going, either to tape (not Travan!) or removable
hard drive

Etc. If you're not 100% sure what you're doing, get a good consultant.
