Re: Demoting BDC holding Infrastructure FSMO in SBS 2003 Domain

My gut says that you'll wind up flattening that other box

I've never had to deal with what your dealing with. I'm assuming you did not create this setup up originally.

You should go to technet.microsoft.com and search the KB on export DHCP this will explain how to do it and import back in and issues you may run into

I'd also recommend you do a search in the KB for tombstone for doing the cleanup

Hi Cris,

Thanks again for the reply.

I had to force the transfer of the infrastructure role back to the SBS
server, no problems so far.

I didn't go ahead with the demotion of the BDC because it is not going
to demote gracefully, I will be forcing the demotion tonight probably.

The reason I cannot gracefully demote it is the fact that the BDC has
exceeded the tombstone lifecycle and it cannot transfer the changes
back to the SBS box, going back to the replication problem, this is
fine as no changes are made on the BDC but it is not allowing the
demotion because of this. Any ideas here?

The only problem with forcing it is the BDC is the DHCP and WINS server
also. I need to transfer these roles back to the SBS box before I can
do it without risking losing these services.

I know when you force a demotion DNS gets broken on the said server
(that's what I have read at least) but am not sure how it would affect
these services.

Also is there an easy way to transfer the current DHCP settings to the
SBS box, I can set up replication for WINS but am not sure about DHCP
and we have alot of reservations set up.

Thanks for your help mate

FSMO Roles, Global Catalog Server, DNS Server, DHCP SErver, WINS Server, RRAS Server, Exchange Server, and ISA Server if you are running Premium Edition, oh and I left out File and Print, SQL Server, Windows Sharepoint Services...whew!
