Re: Error message: Unable to Access the Active Directory

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I can't tell you what went wrong ... but I'd blow it away and start over.
Skip the Dell process, and install SBS manually. You will need to make sure
you have proper drivers that may be required for Raid boards, etc and F6
them in at the appropriate time during boot up.

With your comments about using adprep, it's obvious you have worked in a
Windows Server environment before. I must say, to install SBS, you should
not have to resort to any manual intervention like that. Use the SBS wizards
for everything.

Good luck!

I have setup an SBS 2003 Premium for a client. The installation was part of
the Dell Server installation wizard, not the Microsoft setup process. I
followed the wizards, and it setup the domain and such through that
process.
I am able to add users and computers to the domain and I am able to login
from client workstations.

The trouble started when I tried to install SQL Server. When I insert the
SBS installation disc and click on Set Up Windows Small Business Server, I
get an error message saying "Unable to Access the Active Directory".

When I tried running adprep /forestprep I got another error:
"Adprep was unable to check the current user's group membership.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep has stopped without making changes.
[User Action]
Verify the current logged on user is a member of Domain Admins group,
Enterprise
Admins group and Schema Admins group if /forestprep is specified, or is a
member of Domain Admins group if /domainprep is specified.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error.
Error code: 0x4c9 Error message: The remote system refused the network
connection.."

This error makes absolutely no sense to me. I am logged in as
Administrator,
I have checked the rights (it is part of Domain Admins, Enterprise Admins
and
Schema admins) and I am not trying to access any remote system. I am very
tempted to just reformat the whole thing and starting from scratch w/o all
that Dell fluff. But before I take drastic measures, can someone shed some
light on what it is that I am doing wrong?

Thanks
