Hi,
Thank you for posting here!
From your post, my understanding on this issue is: You encountered windowsexplorer hang, also you find event 1002 and 1002 error on some windows xp
clients If I misunderstand your concern, please let me know.
As far as I know, if any program or application hangs, it will generate a
1002 or 1001 Event ID in event log. It should be an expected behavior. For
more information about the Event ID 1002, please refer to the following
link:
Hang&EvtID=1002&ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&LCID=1033&ProdVer=5.2>
Based on your situation, let us try the following steps to troubleshoot:
Step 1: Dis-connector all networking driver on problematic clients
Step 2: Use Clean Boot to eliminate third party interference
---------------------------------------------------------------
To isolate the influence of additional applications, please boot the system
into a Clean Boot environment to see whether this problem continues. A
clean boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that are
loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device drivers
or programs that are installed in your computer.
1) Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2) In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3) In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4) Click OK and restart your computer.
If your issue is resolved at this point, repeat the process, but add one
check back each time to the list of files listed under the "Startup" and
"Services" menu until the issue reappears again, when this happens follow
these steps:
1) Select the tab for the last file you enabled and remove the checks from
each line in that file.
2) Click the Apply button
3) Reboot your computer and verify the issue has not reappeared.
4) Replace each check mark one line at a time.
5) Click the Apply button.
6) Reboot your computer.
Step 3: Start Windows in Safe mode
--------------------------------------
a. Restart the computer.
b. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
c. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.
d. Start the computer in Safe Mode.
e. Start and work in Excel to check if Excel works properly
Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform
differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the
system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer. When the
issue reappears you will then know which line or command is causing the
issue.
Step 4: If you temporary remove the HP printer on SBS server? Does this
issue persist?

Have a nice day!

| SBS 2003 SP1 server with Windows XP workstations
|
| Since yesterday, some of the workstations have been experiencing
| frequent instances in which Windows Explorer stops responding. All
| other applications continue to respond normally, and End Task can be
| used to stop Windows Explorer.
|
| I theorized the recent Windows updates might be the problem, so did a
| system restore on my own workstation which did not resolve the problem.
|
| Then I wondered if installing a new HP LaserJet driver on the server
| (shared printer) yesterday might have caused the problem. But if so,
| how would I resolve it (short of removing the driver)?
|
| A pair of error messages occasionally occurs in my workstation's
| application event log.
