Hi,.
Thanks for your update.
Based on my experience, on SBS server, there are already 2 instances using
MSDE to store SharePoint (Companyweb) uses the MSSQL$SharePoint database,
while the Monitoring features use the MSSQL$SBSMonitoring database to store
data. Both of these features are mutually exclusive for the most part.
If you are using SQL 2000, you could (and you should) upgrade the
SharePoint named instance to full SQL.
Note : You cannot upgrade the Monitoring instance to SQL
The steps are listed in the premiuminstallsteps.htm on the root of the
Premium CD. (I will send you this file in a separated email) After SQL
installation, you should only have the following 2 items in ''Add/Remove
Programs'':
* Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (SHAREPOINT)
* Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SBSMONITORING)
In addition, you can also find the steps on how to upgrade to SQL server in
the following KB article
How to turn on full-text search in Windows SharePoint Services on a Windows
Small Business Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;837367
Currently please check whether MSSQLSERVER service is started. You can
remote SQL on your SBS and follow the steps above to upgrade to SQL
If the issue persists, please refer to following MS article to reinstall
SPS components
829114 How to remove and how to install the Windows Small Business Server
2003 SharePoint Services Companyweb Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829114
829112 How to back up and restore http://companyweb data in Windows Small
Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829112
827701 How to perform a disaster recovery operation of SharePoint Services
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=827701
After that do not upgrade to SQL immediately, Please Verify if the
companyweb is functional.
According to your situation, please perform a full bakup before you perform
these actions above.
Hope this helps, I look forward to your update.
Have a nice day!
Best Regards,
Chace Zhang (MSFT)

| Chace,
|
| I must be missing something, I got as far as re-installing SQL std and
| upgraded the instance of sharepoint, I did not upgrade sbs monitoring.
In
| services I see 2 services (mssql$sharepoint and mssql$sbsmonitoring) both
are
| started. I have installed SQL SP-4, but the system tray icon shows "not
| connected" , there are no errors in the event logs. I open enterprise
| manager to restore the 2 databases I backed up and I do not have the
ability
| to restore them. What I see is the SQL server group and (LOCAL) under
it, if
| I click on it, I get "The SQL Server \\(LOCAL) is not known to be
running.
| Are you sure you wish to connect?, if I click Yes, I get "A connection
could
| not be established to(LOCAL). Reason: SQL server does not exist or
access
| denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect()).. Please verify SQL server is
running
| and check your SQL server registration properties (by right clicking on
the
| (LOCAL) node) and try again.
