RE: NTbackup Failure after upgrade from Server 2000 to SBS 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Ddk,

Thank you for posting here.

I understand you encountered following error message during running NT
backup.

"MS_UpdateNtms0midinfo. Error reported 11"

Based on my research, please perform the following steps to narrow down
this issue:

Step 1
=======
The following KB article lists the Dlls that RSM uses to verify the
On-Media Identifiers on the Tape.

250468 How Removable Storage Manager and Programs Recognize Media
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=250468

Check the following registry keys to verify that the paths to the dlls are
valid:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\HP
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\MTF
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\QIC

Also check for any other keys under Tape that might precede "HP", and
impeed RSM
from parsing its main registry keys for OMIDs.

Step 2
==========
Do you install Veritas on your SBS Server?

This has also been seen with Vertias Backup Exec 9 or 9.1 installed on
Windows 2003. A BE subkey is added under Tape which has a "Path" key with a
value
of %systemroot%\system32\mll_be.dll.
In this case the mll_be.dll was not copied to the system32 directory. Copy
the dll to %systemroot\system32 and reboot the machine.

Step 3
=========
I recommend you to contact our CSS to obtain the following Hotfixes and
install them:

833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167

867764 Volume Shadow Copy service snapshots are lost after you restart
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=867764

Hope this helps, if you have any other concerns on this issue, please feel
free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Chace Zhang (MSFT)

| I get the following error evertime NTbackup runs.
|
| "The device reported an error on a request to MS_UpdateNtms0midinfo.
| Error reported 11.
|
| There may be a hardware or medium problem. Please check the system event
| log for relevant failures."
|
| Then after clicking Continue. I get:
|
| "An inconsistency ws encountered on the media in 8mmAIT1. Do not append
to
| this media."
|
| It happens with all media. I have updated the tape driver to the
| recommended drvier from HP. The tape drive is a HP AIT 100GB USB
external
| drive. the event viewer log is useless it just says there was an error
| encountered.
|
| I need to get these backups working. They worked before the upgrade.
