That would explain it - the UPS is using the RS-232 connection.

Oh well, looking at a new SBS system now with no APC software, and the UPS
on the USB port, those other options don't appear in the Windows applet. In
fact it doesn't seem to have support for USB, since the only choices for
connection are COM1,2,3.
No matter since I'll just put in the APC software, but I don't know how to
get the applet to look at the USB port.
