That would explain it - the UPS is using the RS-232 connection.
Thanks for your help, Owen.
Cheers,
Bill

I agree with your minimalist approach, Owen, as long as the built-in
support
does the job. I have the same problem as Tom regarding the configuration,
though. I have looked all over that applet and, just like Tom, I can't
find
some of the settings you mention (SBS 2k3 SP1).
Tom and Bill:
Based on what I have seen, the exact appearance of the power control
dialog boxes depends on whether the UPS is connected to the computer
using RS-232 serial or USB. If you see specific minutes remaining and
similar, you are using an RS-232 connection. If you see percentages
(the settings I referenced earlier), you are using USB.
Some UPSs support both. If so, USB is preferred, if for no other reason
that it gives you better control (percentages rather than absolute
times) of alarm and shutdown behavior. [NOTE: With APC, a special
'reset' procedure may be required to change the UPS from one to the
other. See the APC documentation. I don't know whether this is true of
other UPSs.]
But all is not lost with RS-232 serial. (I support servers that use
these connections.) For them, examine what the UPS is reporting as the
maximum time on battery. Then, adjust the alarm and/or shutdown
settings accordingly.
