SBS2003 - VPN and Authenticated Email Quiries

Hi there,
I have recently been involved in installing a new SBS 2003 (Standard) server, and everything appears to be going fine.... with the exception of the email, and I'm really puzzled on how to check this weird issue out.
The client signed up for BT Broadband, and they did not get a fixed IP package. Typically they then said they wanted to use the VPN feature, the info I was given was that it would be to check email and documents etc, but it then turns out they are looking for 4 users to be using the VPN to access a custom database!
Question: How many users can sit online via vpn connection at any one time?
Anyway....
The email has been set up in the standard way, using DNS to route the email, but I set up the authentication side with the clients name@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and password, and everything appeared to be working ok. I then find out that a lot of emails are not being sent, and are bouncing back immediately saying the IP has been banned and being treated as spam.
I try to use the smtp.btconnect.com rather than DNS, but then I find that NO emails are being sent, so I call up BT and get told that the company domain name is not on their relay, so I need to provide proof of ownership of the domain and a copy of a company letter head!!! I have this in progress as I am writing, but things then start to become more weird.
The company used to use another smtp feed so they could send mail from anywhere, but even when I tried to configure this up on the exchange side, I kept getting an authentication error on their side, and after speaking to two of their technical people they inform me that I have set up everything as standard, it should work, but it's not!!!!!
Is there any way of checking to see if the authentication information I am sending is actually getting out there to be checked???
Might there be something blocking the authentication information? If so, any idea on how this is checked as well?
Is it possible the BT supplied router could be doing something weird? Even though I appear to have everything set up correctly!
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Gordon
