John
I am in a similar position at present. I have several clients that I care for on a part time basis. I have a full time "enterprise" job.
My clients all understand that I will do my best to work with them when situations arise but that I may not be able to drop everything and run over there when a PC won't boot, or they see an unusual issue on the screen
but I have tools available that I can remote in from my regular job and its usually a 5 minute fix. If its more than that...they understand that I'll get there right after work...I have keys and security codes etc. I also don't charge the customer 125 or 150/hr like I would if I were doing this full time and could be available at the drop of a hat.
So assuming you can care for your customer in a similar manner and they are ok with that...there is no reason that they should not take advantage of all the tools that are included in SBS
You say this was a colleague. I don't know if you guys work together or for different companies or what, but he obviously doesn't understand that a "small business" is only small because of the number of employees, not because their technology needs are less than an enterprise customer.
They need to collaborate (Windows Sharepoint Services/Company Web), they need to manage their time and communicate effectively (Exchange/Outlook) and they need to manage their information through centralized storage (Windows Server) and they need to plan for disaster recovery.
Doing things more efficiently is a top priority of small business

Hi email gurus,
I was going to post a query as to why my SMTP outgoing mail was not arriving
at destination. Initially I could see it go into the queues and then was
gone, however did not appear at destination (eg <mymail>@yahoo.com). However
it all started working when I left the site? Propogation through DNS?
Oh well, all's well that ends?
I then had an argument (discussion) with a collegue. His opinion was that
using exchange was an overkill for a small office (3 - 5) users and that I
should setup like a home user. IE an ISP hosted email for each user and let
Outlook do a POP fetch of the email regularly. The ISP is hosting the domain
name web site. He claims that this small business that I am administering
only part time will be better off if the ISP is taking all responsibility for
email assuming I am not always available to them if something should go wrong.
It seems to me that the SMTP connection is pretty clean and simple (baring I
don't understand what happened initally) but what are the pros and cons?
Regards,
John
