Hi Chris,
Again this may be a dumb question - once we seperate the products onto seperate boxes -w2k3 server on one box and exchange on another, how many transitions CALS do we need? We will then have 2 x w2k3 servers and one exchange server, do we buy the same number of transition CALS per server, or do we just need one CAL per user, and that will license the users to access both of the windows servers and the exchange one? I am counting 2 x windows servers as one will be used for running exchange, but it will be dedicated to exchange and not used for anything else, so wasn't sure if we also needed cals for windows on that box.
Also once we shift from the standards to the enterprise version, do we still use the transition cals, or do we need to buy different ones?
I have spoken to MS licensing here in the UK, but it always goes through to some call center in god knows what country, and they have difficulty understanding me or my questions if they stray off their script.

Awesome,
Thanks for your help Chris. I have a couple more questions which might be OT, but thought I'd ask anyway!
Once the transition pack is applied, do we lose all the SBS CALS, or do they convert to something else? Do we buy standard CALS for 2k3 server and exchange after applying it, or transition pack CALS? I can't find out exactly what transition pack CALS are from anywhere.
Cheers,
James

Once you remove the SBS server and move the FSMO roles to the Enterprise server...this is no longer an SBS domain..there are "contraints" remaining
I'm glad you've been in contact with Jeff and I'm sure you'll find that the best method to go

Thanks for your suggestions Chris,
We are shifting away from SBS as we are rapidly outgrowing the constraints it imposes - in the next couple of months we will be up to 400 users, and shortly afterwards will be adding another 150 users to a call centre and opening two branch offices.
Due to the rapid expansion and projected load, we also need to shift the products onto seperate servers. We are using the transition pack as MS licensing told us it is the most cost effective way of keeping the investment we have already made in SBS, and it will provide us with seperates products that will then need to be upgraded.
If we add the W2K3 enterprise server directly to the SBS2000 domain (after upgrading schema to the W2K3 version) will it have any constraints left over from the SBS domain or not? I do frequently use the sbsmigration tools for these kind of projects, and have sent a message to Jeff to see if he has ideas too.
Cheers,
James

Think you are spending more money than necessary
You can introduce your Win2k3 enterprise server directly in to the SBS 2000 domain
run ForestPrep and Domainprep from the Win2k3 software on the SBS server then add your enterprise server.
Then proceed as you suggested.
you may also want to check out sbsmigration.com for thoughts.
We are always curious as to why people are leaving SBS if you don't mindsharing

Can anyone offer some help with this one?
I have an SBS 2000 domain, and need to upgrade to Enterprise versions of
Windows Server and Exchange on new hardware, one machine for Server one for
Exchange.
My plan so far is:-
1. Upgrade SBS2000 to SBS 2003.
2. Use a transition pack to obtain seperate server CALS and remove
restrictions of SBS.
3. Install a new Windows 2003 Enterprise Server into the domain on new
hardware, and install Exchange 2003 Enterprise Server on this box, adding it
as an
additional Exchange Server in the existing Exchange organization.
4. Move users mailboxes from the original Exchange Server to the Exchange
Enterprise Server, then remove the first Exchange server from the
organization as per
KB822931.
5. Install a second Windows 2003 Enterprise Server into the domain on new
hardware, promote to be an additional domain controller, transfer all FSMO
roles to
this new machine, and remove the original server from the domain.
If anyone can offer me a better plan or any advice on licensing, that would
help, my usual contacts in the channel are being useless with licensing
information at the moment.
I am guessing I need one Windows CAL for each user, and one Exchange CAL for
each user (there will be over 100 to begin with, growing to 400 in next 2
months). Have I missed anything?
Cheers,
James
