Re: Anyone using Iomega REV for SBS Backup?

One of my clients uses it. It was purchased as a server kit with ArcServe
Backup software. I have NEVER had an error on the tapes, yet. The one
downside is if you want to use the SBS Backup Wizard it will not work
because the wizard can not write to a CD Rom Drive (This is how the tape is
viewed from the Operating System. Of course you can always use the SBS
Backup Wizard to save to a file and then just copy the file to the tape. Or
the NTbackup wizard works just fine -- go figure.)

One other thing do not use the Automatic Backup Pro Software. It is not
server grade.

Leythos,

I was was looking for some help on a different topic and came across your
post and felt compelled to respond.

We use Rev drives on lots of our SBS installations after experiencing lots
of problems with Travan and DAT72 drives and Media. The trick is not to
install any of the Iomega drivers and just use Filestreamer RM. This works
very well and enables a very fast selctive or full system restore.

I have to disagree about the quality of the Iomega kit, it is much better
than TR40 drives and the media is far more reliable, in fact we have never
had one fail yet. Typically most users need to change their tapes every
year,
not so costly for DAT but Travan tapes are very expensive.

As a result of tape problems I put a new TR40 drive in our test server and
run repeated 20GB backup/verify routines with new tapes and found that
virtualy all tapes started erroring after about 30-40 cycles. Under the
same
test DAT72 seemed a bit better but 50 cycles was about the max. With the
Rev
I turned the test off after 800 cycles and we had not seen a single
error -
How can you say Rev technology is not up to server applications, have you
ever done any tests to back up your claims?

The only problem we have found is that the transfer speed is so high
compared to Tape you can get processor activity alerts during the backup
and
verify processes, this only affects slower servers but it OK as long as
you
do your backup in the early hours. On a decent Xeon server a 30GB backup
and
verify can be completed in under 2 hours which is is much faster than DAT
or
Travan.

I'm just waiting for delivery of 70G version, once I've given it a
hammering, I'll post an update.

I would thoroughly recommend the Rev drive for SBS so perhaps you just had
a
bad experience or did not discover Filestreamer

I would agree with you Peter
The REV drive is not a server class device

The key word, the one that should have warned anyone, is "Iomega".
Nothing they make is workstation or server class.
