Hi Roger,
I am jenny and I am backup of Steve for he is now OOF. I am sorry for
inconvenience for that.
I would like to suggest that you perform a full backup of server in case
any unexpected things before you change RAID controller, you can restore
server. For your convenience, I list the Microsoft white paper link:
Backing Up and Restoring Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/maintain/bkuprstr.mspx
What is more, I suggest that you contact the defective RAID controller
vendor for help if you want to replace it. They are more familiar than us
with their own production. Thanks for your understanding.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

Good to know. Their Snap Restore feature comes with version 9.1. Any
chance you happened to try that?

Overall, I've been pretty happy with Acronis. I have used ver 6 and 7,
skipped over 8 and now beginning to use v9 in both server and

This is great to hear. With the buyout and subsequent annihilation of
my favorite volume imaging publisher, PowerQuest, I've been looking
first.solutions that don't have the name Sym..... (you know who) in front of
them.

I have used Acronis images for successful disaster recovery and disk

Acronis literature suggests that you stop the services during the
snapshot
phase. That's why I said it's best to capture the image when SBS is
not
running - using the Acronis CD Boot environment.

Thanks for the tip on installing the new (Adaptec) controller
insideI
am
indeed planning to use Acronis True Image Server. I have used this
successfully under SBS before by stopping Exchange services etc .

Roger,
You didn't mention any specific controllers, but in general terms
all
you
need to do is this:
1) Install the new controller into the server along side of the
current
controller. You may have to connect disks to the new controller in
order
for it load it's bios. By doing this, your current windows
installation
will install the necessary drivers it needs to use the new
controller.
2) Image the complete server onto a USB drive or fast network
storage
device. I like to use Acronis. It's best to create the image
canthe
linux boot environment, rather than with the SBS running.
3) Move the drives to the new controller. If you're lucky, you
willdo
this without destroying the data on the drives. Sometimes this is
done
by
only initially installing one drive first. Once the server has
booted,
you then "rebuild" the array with the 2nd drive. This probably
have*not*
work with different controllers. So rebuild the array on the new
controller and re-image the new array. At this time you would
tothe
option to adjust partition sizes if needed. Many systems I see are
getting tight on space on the C partition.
4) Boot up. Since the image of Windows had the necessary drivers,
it
should work fine. After the system is running and you are
satisfied,
you
may want to uninstall the old controllers device drivers.

How easy is it likely to be to change a RAID controller (on an
add-in
card) from one brand and model to a completely different one?
I have an aparently defective controller that keeps dropping one
of
the
two mirrored drives (despite driver updates, a new drive etc
although
in
a final attempt to get it working I have yet to update the
firmware)
and
I would like to swap it. Obviously a full backup will be taken
beforehand and probably an image as well but is a restore going
be
necessary or can I get away with breaking the mirror (effectively
already broken anyway) and recreating a mirrored array on the new
controller ?
