Hi Collin,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup. Many thanks for CO-DBA-SC-EL's input.
From your description, I understand the issue is that the shared printerBrother HL1430 can not used on the SBS server box and client workstations.
If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my experience, the issue may occur due to hardware compatibility
issue. And I have searched the printer brand in Microsoft productions
category web site, It is not the Microsoft certificated printers for
Windows 2003 and Windows XP. You can double confirm in the following web
site: www.microsoft.com/hcl.
What is more, you can follow the steps below to isolate the issue
I. If computers need to share the printer to print, the compatible printer
driver must be installed on the computers. So please ensure that you have
installed appropriate printer driver on the computers that need share the
printer. It is better way to contact your hardware vendor to support the
issue since they are more familiar with their productions than us. Thank
you for your understanding.
And I have searched the internet and found some information regarding to
the printer. Hope it helps.
The following information is copied from the link:
***************************************************
If you try to install the drivers from the Brother CD-ROM into a Windows
Server? 2003 environment, you will get an error during the installation
process of PaperPort and you will not be able to install the drivers from
the CD. However, there is a way, depending on your model, to download the
correct drivers from the Brother website for printing only.
Currently, Brother software/drivers do not support scanning, PaperPort and
PC faxing in a Windows Server? 2003 environment. Only printing is supported
using one of three methods depending on your unit:
Use a Windows? XP driver and a Brother patch program
Use a Windows Server? 2003 In-box driver as an alternative to the Windows?
XP driver for printing
Use an alternative driver for printing

II. And also you can follow C_O's suggestion to ensure the File and Printer
Sharing checkbox is checked under Exceptions tab in Windows firewall on the
computer. You can check as follows:
1. Open Control panel and double click Windows Firewall to open its
Properties page.
2. Click Exceptions tab, please ensure the File and Printer Sharing
checkbox is checked.
And please ensure file and printer sharing is turned on in the network
connection properties. To do so:
1. Right click the network adapter connection of the computer to open its
properties page.
2. Under General tab, please ensure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks check box selected. If no, please install it.
Then please test the issue to see if the issue resolved.
III. If the issue persists although you can ensure the driver installed
properly, I suggest that you disable all firewall applications and firewall
client on the computer and the SBS server. And perform a clean boot on the
server box to see if the issue resolved.
A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.
1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
4) Restart the computer and disable all firewall applications on the server
box. Then please test the issue to see what happens.
If the issue persists, please help me collect the following information for
analyze:
1. What is the exact error message when you find the printer and try to
select it from list? Please capture a screen shot of the error message.
Please mail the image to my working mailbox: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. Please directly connect the printer to the SBS server box and install
the appropriate driver on the server box, can you installed it and print
successfully?
3. Please run command "msinfo32" (no quotation marks) on the SBS server box
and the problematic computer to launch System Information console. And
click File and then Save. Save the system information to a .nfo file to
send to me. My working mailbox: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Please compress all files and mail me at: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I appreciate your time! I am happy to be assistance of you and look forward
to your reply!
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

HI,
I have upgraded a PC on my network with XP Pro (from Win98), and
Proa
shared printer (Brother HL1430), this installs fine and prints the test
page
from the lient machine to which it is connected to. I have shared this
printer, however I am unable to install this printer on the server or
other
client machines. I can find the printer in the "find a printer in the
directory" but when I select this from the list, it fails.
The odd thing is I have two Brother HL1430, with one connected to another
client machine (XP Pro) and this shares fine. Both printer have differant
shared names. I have attempted to install the printer on an another XP
andmachines but these fails awell.
I have installed and reinstalled several times (logging on as the user
haveadministrator), changing the shared name but can not get this resolved.
Any ideas? (have also checked the event viewer with no mention of failed
printers). The printer previously worked well on the Win98 machine (and
still
does when I plug the machine back in - FYI old and new machines both
the
some machine name).
Server: SBS2003
Client: XP Pro
Printer: Brother HL1430
Many thanks
Colin
