Re: ADSL modem connexion from SBS 2003 server

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Omar

Since MS officially supports this configuration it is difficult to provide
references to back up my statement. My statement that PPPoE directly from
NIC to modem is problematic comes from experience and from others experience
in the Newsgroups. This especially appears noticeable on Server restarts due
to timing issues on many ISPs. The Router keeps the Internet live through
restarts eliminating this. You also have some small added security advantage
of your External NIC has a static IP in a Private range instead of Public
and the router forwards only the desired ports.

As far as the power saving box NO network interface card anywhere on a
network requiring continuous connection should have power saving enabled,
especially a server.

Thank you Cris for your reply:

I verified the external ethernet card connected to the modem, in power
management configuration, "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power" is checked. But I noted that the internal ethernet card
has the same default configuration as well (internal and external
ethernet cards in the remote VPN network where I'm working now have
also that configuration).

Maybe I should add here that the SBS 2003/ISA 2004 network experiencing
the problem has a PPT VPN connection with another SBS 2003/ISA2004
network (where I'm working now), and 2 others IPSEC VPN networks
connections.

I don't think, if I understood your suggestion, the problem comes from
that checkbox, provided that it does not arise all the times but
sometimes.

Neither have I thought Merv suggestion (thank you Merv for your reply,
I don't know how to add this new issue in a way to reply to everyone)
is the cause, an "authentication heart beat" sent by our ISP (Orange
France in fact) for the same reasons: the problem arise not all the
time.
Maybe the rule is that the modem stops responding (is the modem who do
not reply, or is the ISP who stop sending packets, or is ISA who refuse
them?) when there's nobody working locally.
And to Frank: (thank you Frank for your reply) I'd buy tomorrow the
proposed router if I'd be sure that this way I'll fix the problem
(I changed the modem and I'm still experiencing the problem!): why an
external ethernet card configured for PPPoE to the modem is
problematic? Could you clarify this or give me references to look at?
There are several events logged in both System and Application at the
time the problem arises that could help find the source of the problem.
Finally, couldn't we put in place some log, anywhere, to see at least
who, the ISP, the modem, the external ethernet card, or ISA, is the
source?
Thank you for helping me with this critical issue.

We are experiencing the following internet connection problem in the
SBS 2003 server I'm administering:
By night, but not all nights, when people leave the office, the local
network gets disconnected from the Internet. The day after, when the
first user arrives and realize there's no internet connection, he or
she turn off the ADSL modem, waits some seconds, turn it on again and
that's all: everything it's OK.
The problem began several months ago. In between, we changed the ADSL
modem, we ran several times CEICW, I discussed this problem with other
colleagues and once again, here I am, being not able to remote desktop
the network because it should be disconnected from the Internet, and
there's nobody to ask for turning off and on the ADSL modem.
We've been using a DSL 300-T D-Link modem for more than a year and, 4
weeks ago, we changed it for ADSLMUE Linksys: we are always the same
problem.
If it's not the modem: it's something in the SBS 2003 + ISA 2004
configuration?
It's the rate of the ISP (up to 8Mb) too much for the modems? But why
if they are turn off/on they began to run smoothly?
The modem is configured as BRIDGE (also was the D-Link first modem), so
there's a connection created by the SBS CEICW, who uses a username
and password.
The server has two network adapters: one for the local network and the
other connected to the ADSLMUE Linksys modem.
Can someone help me in finding why the modem loss the internet
connection, knowing that if it's turn off and on he gets connected
again?
Unfortunately, because I can't at this modem log on to the server, I
can't add here the application / system events that surely I'll
find tomorrow morning.
