It's an interesting testimony. When you say "off-OS", are you referring
to the old way, where you boot to a floppy and run your imaging
operations from there?

Is there anybody who's done a successful restore using Symantec Live
State or Acronis True Image?

Hi,

I would like to weigh in with a recent experience.

When you do your backup, double check that your exchange databases are
really valid. My backups were corrupt when I restored to the new data
mirror. Look at the files priv.edb, priv.stm, and log files and make sure
they have exactly the same time and date stamp, and that the stamps matches
the backup time. I found that incremental backups with Symantec Live State
Recovery were not really doing it, the .stm file and the .edb files had
different time and dates. Same with the pub. Had to do a hard exchange
recovery that morning (with PPS help) Do a couple more backups after that,
you may think the time is excessive, but will not regret it when you build
the mirror and find you cannot keep your data. Do some sit-ups while you
wait.

An off-OS solution would certainly have helped me out.

Allow for a ton of time for the initial synching with larger drives. I
moved a 70gb data image over to a new hardware mirror (twin 145gb scsi u320
on an LSI 21320-R controller) on a weekday evening (not smart). Resynching
took ~1gb/hour! That meant the drives were synching during the entire next
day of work and into the next night, noticably slowing the rig.

And, for the other thread about SATA drives, SCSI u320 are still king. I am
using 15k rpm on system and 10k on data. They can make a pretty doggy server
sit up and bark, at least once they are synch'ed.

In any case, even after all that, I am feeling a lot better about not using
the Windows Dynamic mirror anymore.

Sincerely,

.
