RE: Internet usages! Logging and recording

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hi Michael,

Thank you for posting in the SBS Newsgroup.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

I understand that you want to know how to monitor the Internet activity on
the SBS 2K3 Standard server. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
do not hesitate to let me know.

For SBS 2K3 Standard:

We do not have native way to monitor the detail information for Internet
activity. From the Server Usage Report, you can view the general usage of
Web, e-mail, remote connections and fax. However, the report there only
shows the http/https web access usage. If the clients' traffic is not based
on the web access, you will not be able to see the activities through the
report.

However for SBS 2K3 Premium, you can use the ISA report to track the users'
activities. To do so, please see:

1> For ISA 2K:

a. Open ISA 2000, expand to Server and Arrays\Yourdomain\Monitoring
Configuration\Report Jobs.

b. Right click Report Jobs, select New -> Report Job.

c. On the General tab, please name the job.

d. On the Period tab, select report period. For your environment, you can
select weekly so that the ISA server will generate the report based on the
traffic activities of the week.

e. On the Schedule tab, select Immediately for Start Report Generation.

f. Click OK.

g. Wait for several minutes. Go to Server and
Arrays\Yourdomain\Monitoring\Reports.

h. Double-click the report of 'Application Usage' and 'Traffic &
Utilization'. You will be able to identify which application, user or IP
address used large bandwidth.

2> For ISA 2K4:

a. Open ISA 2K4 Management.

b. Expand to Yourdomain\Monitoring.

c. On the middle pane, click Report tab. Click Generate a New Report.

d. Run the New Report Wizard. On the front page, enter the name of the
Report.

e. Report Content: Check all the boxes. Especially Application Usage and
Traffic and Utilization.

f. Report Period: Schedule a report period.

g. Finish rest of the wizard.

As I know, there are also some third-party softwares you can use, you can
refer to the following links and you should contact them and make sure it
can be used on SBS.
