I never insisted he use port 25 or any other port. There are ways to
redirect SMTP via other ports

Kevin,
How can you and Mark insist that opening their port 25 is the best idea
for this admin? What do you know about his working environment? Maybe
they decided to outsource their Virus and Spam filtering processes.
His question wasn't even about whether or not to use his pop connector,
it was how to resolve an issue on it.

I have run my SBS server at home for my business on a residential DSL

from Verizon with dynamic IP for 6 years, using SMTP.
Hogwash with "quality" of business vs residential Intenret lines. It's
all
marketing hype, as far as I'm concerned. You need to go to a business
line
for getyting static or multiple IP addresses.
Besides, if it (your Intenrent connection) works with POP3, why wouldn't
it
work with SMTP?

I will have to agree on switching to SMTP mail over
POP3...............but
to be devils advocate on this there are some cases where business
quality
Internet is not affordable and the ISP won't allow mail servers on
residential connections. Maybe I should say the business owner chooses
to
spend the money on things other than business quality Internet access!!
When there is nearly $100 per month difference in the two I would
struggle
with that! I'm glad I have other options to choose from though!

I'll put it a little more gentler than Mark --- STOP USING POP3!
;-)
Really, here's my take on it ... why do so many people want to use
POP3
when they install SBS? Because for some reason they think it's easier
to
implement. After all, you were using POP3 when you were pulling you
from wherever to your home PC, so let's just keep using POP3 at the
office.
The reality is -- you're missing out on so many great advantages and
features of Exchange by sticking with the POP3 connector.
Do some reading. Ask your questions. Then set yourself a goal to
switch
over to SMTP.

To fix for good... Change your MX record to point to your exchange
server and stop using the POP3 connector. It was designed to be a
migration tool.

If you think installing patches and security updates is expensive,
try
not installing them...

Here's the config:
SBS2003 std with exchange2003sp2, pop3 connector enabled
GFI mail essentials and mail security
Every 2-3 days message are downloaded from the isp using pop3
connector
,
but are not delivered to users mailbox. I have to do a iisreset to
get
the
problem temporarily fixed.
any idea on how to get that problem fixed for good ?
