Corrupted IIS 6.0 Metabase?

Server: SBS 2003
With exchange server running, all of the usual suspects EXCEPT DHCP,
which is being served by the network router.
While troubleshooting a problem with OWA authentications, I discover
that the World Wide Web Publishing service will not respond to an
IISRESET command; it just hangs in starting mode. All other functions
work fine, IISADMIN; I just cant get the W3SVC to start.
For when I go back into the office in a couple of hours to start to
fight this one, are there any "usual suspects" that I should
investigate? In the event viewer, I do remember seeing some 7035 and
7036 events.
If it is a corrupted IIS 6.0 metabase, I was reading about copying the
historical meta file back to the working directory - how does one go
about doing that?
I also have a backup of the System State made last friday; would that
be an easier restore? The wife of my CEO likes to Remote Desktop in
from Hawaii to do the books (its a small office, with SBS 2003 and 4
clients).
I also have read about setting the 6 or so IIS services to a manual
start and then reboot with the NET START command to see if that does
anything... Everything appears normal, except the W3SVC fails to start
- kinda like a car that will not turn over. Admittedly, I am not the
most proficient at IIS troubleshooting...
Today, especially, I really dont have the time to remove/reinstall IIS
and Exchange server!
TIA!
