Hollis,
There are some missing pieces here. If this connection is direct
broadband, then why is the IP address on your external NIC a class A?
Is there a NAT device in front of the server? If so, is that why you
chose to use 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server for this external NIC?
Also missing; from where are your POP3 requests coming? The fact that
you're seeing LAN lights flash during POP requests, means that somehow,
some way your POP3 clients have a path to the internal NIC address.
It's possible that your SBS box is resolving public requests to the
internal address, which is fine for clients on your subnet. It would
not be fine if you are hosting a public name service. Is your SBS
domain name the same as your public name (ie companyname.com)?

You didn't put in your ISP's DNS here as forwarders...But that is what it gets from querying the modem--I don't put that in. This

requests intended for the Internet are forwarded to the DNS

That's not what it needs.. you need ISP's DNS info there..not your NIC info.
is not a PPPOE device, but an always on direct-connect broadband. In fact,
the modem gets that info from the service connection but holds it internally,
and never sends it back to the computer.
