Hi Ian,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time and efforts to the issue.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

The issue indeed is specified in your side. It might use some time to
trouble shoot the issue. I appreciate your understanding.

Let us perform tests below to trouble shoot the issue:

1. Have you installed ISA server on the SBS server box? How many network
adapters installed on the server box? Please run the following command and
mail me the output:

a. Go to command prompt, type "httpcfg query iplisten"
b. Type "portqry -n x.x.x.x -e 80" (replace the x.x.x.x with your public IP
address), copy the output and mail it to me.
c. Repeat step b and query the internal IP address of the SBS Server and
mail the output to me.

2. Please clear "Show friendly HTTP error messages" in IE -> Tools ->
Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing, reproduce this issue, do you get
an error message? If yes, please capture a screen shot of the error message
and mail it to me.

3. Please clean IE cache on the server box and ISA cache (If ISA installed)
to see if it helps.

The steps to clean IE cache:

a). Launch Internet Explorer.
b). Click the Tools menu and then click the Internet Options item.
c). On the General tab, click the "Delete Files" button in the Temporary
Internet Files area.
d). Click to add a checkmark to the "Delete all offline content" item and
then click OK.
e). Click the "Settings" button in the Temporary Internet Files area.
f). Click the "View Files" button, and then remove all the files in the
"Temporary Internet Files" folder. Then close the folder.
g). Click the "View Objects" button, and then remove all the objects whose
status is "Damaged". Then close the folder.
h). Click OK twice to close the dialog boxes.

To clear ISA cache: url cache. You can find the file by default in:

%sysdir%\URlcache

If the issue persists, please enable all extended logging options of the
default web site in IIS manager console, restart Default Web Site. And then
reproduce the issue and get the IIS logs again for me for analyze:

The steps to enable all extended logging options:

1. Open IIS manager console, right click the Default Web Site to open its
properties page. Under Web site tab, please check the option "Enable
logging" and click Properties button.

2. Under Advanced tab, please check all checkboxes here and click twice OK
button to finish the configuration.

3. Run command "iisreset" (no quotation marks) in command prompt to take
effects the changes.

4. Please try to reproduce the issue (backup and monitoring) in server
management console and in IE.

5. Wait some minutes and run command "iisreset" (no quotation marks) in
command prompt to restart the IIS server again.

6. Then please go to folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles to find the latest
log file and send to my working mailbox: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I appreciate your time and cooperation. I am glad to be further assistance
to you.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Jenny,

Here are the steps I have performed.

A) Removed the Administration components in Add/Remove programes

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove
Programs.
2. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click
Change/Remove. The Setup Wizard appears.
3. Click Next to start the wizard.
4. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
5. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change
Server Tools to Maintenance, change Administration component to Remove, and
then click Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish. Then please follow the steps above to reinstall
the component.

Then please re-run CEICW again and then test and let me know the result.

B) - I rebooted the machine and then re-installed the compenents - 1-7
above - I got a warning message saying that the compents installed were
older than the ones removed. So then I thought it best to re-apply the
Server 2003 and SBS2003 Service pack elements from the service pack 1
packages. So I did this and then reboot and reran CEICW.

The backup/monitoring in the System Management console still fails to load
after prompting for the user credentials.

I have used/installed SBS2003 SP1 on other machines and have not
experienced this problem. There are no settings on this machine (that I am
aware) which would have caused the behaviour - I have check and re-checked
the IIS settings as per your email instructions and they are all the same.

What further actions should I take - the other machines I have used have
not had the CA installed and I am a bit concerned about installing
something which is stricktly not necessary.

I am at a loss as the removal of the server administration tools and
re-install has not solved the problem.

After all the steps above - the machine still has the same symptoms as
detailed below.

Please can you advise me how to proceed.

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Ian Robert

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time.

The SBS server by default is not installed as a CA server. We should
manually choose install the Certificate Server Services from Add/Remove
Programs control panel. To check if the server is CA server, you can
open
the services console (services.msc) to see if there is a service called
"Certificate Server Service".

If you have ensure that all settings in IIS server are configured
properly
as I pointed, the issue persists, I think that we should try to
reinstall
the Administrative tools to see if it is administration component issue.

Technical speaking, the process can be done remotely. However it is not
recommended that you do this remotely since it will impact your business
if
there is any unexpected thing happened. I suggest that you book a
non-business time to perform the test and let me know the result.

Have a nice day!

Jenny Wu

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time.

I understand you got the following error after run the certutil
command:
CertUtil: -setreg command FAILED: 0x80070002 <WIN32: 2>
CertUtil: The system cannot find the file specified

This is because you run the command on a computer which is not a CA.
This
command should be executed on the CA server. Please double check if the
Certificate service is installed on the SBS server box. If not, we need
not
create CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS group and update DCOM security settings. I
am
sorry for not clearly describing the prerequisite.

Let us perform the following steps to trouble shoot the issue:

1. Please Logon the SBS server box and open Windows Explorer, navigate
to
\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc directory and open the hosts file. In the
Open With dialog box, select Notepad and click OK. Let's manually add
the
following entry to the bottom of the file:

192.168.1.x (internalIP of the SBS server) servername

Here 192.168.1.x is the IP address of the internal NIC of the SBS
Server,
please replace it with the real one. ENSURE that you press ENTER after
you
add this line to the hosts file to ensure that there is an empty line
at
the end of the file.

After doing so, we will have the host file as the following sample:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.a smallbiz

Then please logon the OWA site using http://servername/backup, what is
the
result?

2. Please run "nltest /sc_reset" on the SBS server to removes and then
rebuilds the secure channel established by the NetLogon service.

For information about this:

Nltest Syntax

c
-
b
0
2b-19a7575ed8601033.mspx?mfr=true

3. Please re-run CEICW (To DO List->Connect to the Internet) to
re-configure all network configuration. Please note: please do NOT pass
any
steps and re-configure all the settings in the wizard.

4. Open IIS server console, navigate the Default web site, right click
it
to open its properties page. Under Web Site tab, please ensure you have
input correct information:

-- IP address: "All Unassigned" (if there is not ISA installed. If the
ISA
server is installed, the "IP address" should set as "internalIP of the
SBS
server box").

-- TCP port listening on TCP: 80; SSL Port: 443

Then please test to see if the issue resolved.

5. If the issue persists, I would like to suggest that you reinstall
the
administrative tools to see if it helps.

Note: after you reinstall the administrative tools, you should re-run
CEICW
again and then test the issue and let me know the result.

6. If the issue persists, please help me collect the following
information
for further analyze:

1). Have you installed ISA server on the SBS server box? How many
network
adapters installed on the server box?

2). How many DCs or member server installed on your network? Is there
only
the SBS server box?

3). Please reproduce the issue and help me collect the whole IIS log
files
for analyze. And also please collect the MPS report for analyze.

4). Please capture the Netmon Log for analyze. The steps:

A. Go to the following link to download Netmon:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/pss/tools/netmon

Notes:
- Netmon2.zip contains Netmon 2.0 (Netmon 2.0 runs on Windows NT 4.0,
Windows 2000, and Windows XP)
- Netmon1.zip contains Netmon 1.0 (Netmon 1.0 runs on Windows NT 4.0,
Windows 98, and Windows 95)
- The password to unzip is "trace".
- If the above FTP site cannot be accessed, please wait a while and try
again.

B. Then unzip netmon2.zip and execute qfesetup.exe to install Netmon on
one
Windows XP workstation and the SBS server box.

For more information about how to use it, please refer to the following
KB
article:

148942 How to Capture Network Traffic with Network Monitor
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=148942

C. After installing Network Monitor, you should find the shortcut in
Start
-> Administrative Tools -> Network Monitor.

a. Start Network Monitor and select the SBS internal NIC in
Capture\Networks.
b. Go to Capture/Buffer settings and set the buffer size to at least
10MB
(I would suggest to set it to 50) to try and make sure no packets are
dropped.
c. Go to Capture/Start to start the netmon capture. Then please
reproduce
the issue (backup and monitoring) in server management console and in
IE.
e. Go to Capture/Stop.
f. Then you should be able to go to File/Save As.

Please compress all file and send to me at v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I appreciate your time and efforts to the issue.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu (MSFT)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your update.

Please also check the following settings before you perform the 7th
step:

1. Please check to ensure that a new security group,
CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS,
has been created after applied the SP1.

2. Please ensure the "Domain Users", "Domain Computers", "Domain
Controllers" groups have been added to the new CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS
security
group.

3. Then, we can have Certificate Services update the DCOM security
settings
by running the following commands:

certutil -setreg SetupStatus -SETUP_DCOM_SECURITY_UPDATED_FLAG
net stop certsvc
net start certsvc

Please check if the problem has been fixed.

Please look into the following article to get more information:

Jenny,

I have tried steps 1-4 and here are the results.

Step 1) - removed the restrictions
Step 2) - the default permissions seem to be ok, except Network has
"list
files" permission - so I gave it "full control"
Step 3) - No the only thing that is displayed is "LOADING" as per
previous
screen shots
Step 4) - When accessing via http://servername/backup - prompted for
authentication - but and "loading is displayed"
When accessing via http://ipaddress/backup - prompted for
authentication
-
but the backup log page is displayed correctly !
Accessed http://ipaddress/monitoring and http://servername/monitoring
the
same way - and same results - it doesn't like it when using
servername!

Step 7 onward are going to take some time. And I will need to
schedule
some
down time for the server - probably over a weekend.

Thank you for your time and assistance on this matter.

Regards

Ian

Thanks for your information. I appreciate your time to the issue.

I. After researched the metabase, the settings of the backup VD seem
to
be
configured properly. The issue seems to be complex and we need some
time
to
trouble shoot the issue. Let us perform some test to further trouble
shoot
the issue:

1. Please change the setting of "IP address and domain name
restriction"
to
"Granted access" to all workstations on the Default Web Site (IIs
server
->
Default Web Site -> Directory Security -> IP address and domain name
restriction).

Then please run command "iisreset" (no quotation marks) to refresh
IIS
server.

2. Please double check the security settings of the directory:
c:\inetpub\Backup. Please go to the folder c:\inetpub\Backup and
right
click it to open Properties page, under Security tab, please ensure
Administrators, Network, System have full control permissions.

3. Then Open IIS server, navigate to node Default Web Site ->
Backup,
then
right click it to choose browse item, Can you see the report
properly
in
the right panel?

4. Open IE, and then access the backup site using URL:
http://servername/backup and http://internalIP/backup, what is the
result?

5. Have you installed ISA server on the SBS server box? Please try
to
re-run CEICW (To DO List->Connect to the Internet) to refresh all
network
configuration.

Then please test to see if it helps.

6. Please double check if there is any other build-in web sites have
this
issue. Open server management console, navigate to node Monitoring
and
reporting, does the server performance report page appear in the
right
panel?

7. Please logon one LAN workstation and then access the backup site,
what
is the result?

II. If the issue persists, let us try to reinstall the
Administration
component of the administration tool to see if it helps. You can
refer
to
the following steps:

0. Before you reinstall the components, I suggest that you do a full
backup
of server in case of any unexpected problems, you can restore the
server.
