Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
What does the event log say?
You may also want to try http://www.firstreamer.com/fsrm/. It allows both
SBS Backup and NTBackup to write directly to an external HDD with no bkf
files involved. This can make a difference.

I've searched the web for info on this error and have found others with
the same issue but no one has provided any answers.
Backup job consistently fails near 45 - 70 gigs of backup to file
(.bkf). I receive the following error in the backup log file:
Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to
media.
Error reported: Unknown error.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.

I've followed the instructions on the provided link.
This is a Windows SBS 2003 Server with SP1. Shadow Copies appear to be
working and the external hard drive is formatted with NTFS (full
format) and has PLENTY of space. In addition, I have enabled drive
caching and disabled quick removal for the USB drive (doesn't seem to
make a difference). I've had the administrator account taken ownership
of all files and the job is running as administrator. There is no
consistency for where the backup fails, except that it is always
between 45 - 70 gigs and not on a specific file.
I've manually launched the SBS Backup using the NTBackup.exe program
and loading the script created by the SBS server. The jobs fail either
way. When backing up smaller chunks of data, the job succeeds. I am
able to backup the System State and Exchange in a separate job.
I would have expected consistent results using an external hard drive
instead of tapes.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
