Hi Karl,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand the issue is that you can not installISA 2004 on the SBS 2003 SP1 server box. If I am off base, please don't
hesitate to let me know.
Let us follow the steps below to trouble shoot the issue:
Firstly please check the registry key to identify the SBS 2003 current
service pack status. Please open 'regedit' program, navigate to the
following registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\ServicePackNumber
If the value of the key is '1', it reveals the server is at SP1. The ISA
Server 2004 will be unable to install until we apply the SBS SP1 component.
If the SBS 2003 SP1 has been applied successfully, let us try the following
suggestions:
Suggestion 1:
================
On the root of C drive there was a hidden config.msi folder which was
created by a MSI installer for a previous failed installation of another
application. If the folder does exist in the SBS box, please try renaming
that folder to config.msi.old. To view hidden folder, please click
Tools->Folder Options, go to the View tab, and then change the option
"Hidden files and folders" to "Show hidden files and folders".
Detailed steps:
1. Open explorer and navigate to the location of your config.msi folder
(this is a hidden system folder created by the MSI installation, located on
the root of the C: drive by default)
2. Remove the read-only and system flags from the folder
3. Rename the folder to config.msi.old
4. Restart the ISA 2004 installation. Here I assume that D: drive is the
drive of your CD-ROM, you can navigate to D:\ISASetup\ folder and then
double click the "sbsisa2k4setup.exe" file to initialize the installation.
Suggestion 2:
================
If the issue persists, please backup ISA 2000 settings and manually remove
the ISA 2000, and then launch the ISA 2004 installation manually to see if
the issue resolved.
Launch the ISA 2004 MSI package manually and install ISA:
<cd drive>:\ISA2004\FPC\MS_FPC_SERVER.MSI
If the installation of MS_FPC_SERVER.MSI is NOT installed successfully,
then run it with the following command to create a LOG file of the
installation:
msiexec.exe /i D:\ISA2004\FPC\MS_FPC_SERVER.msi /l* c:\isa.txt
The log file will be located on C:\isa.txt. You may send it to my working
mailbox:v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further investigation.
Suggestion 3:
================
Please double check if there is any anti-virus software installed on the
SBS box. If any, please disable it.
Moreover, let's schedule a down time and perform a Clean Boot on the SBS
Server. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or
programs that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with
other device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.
A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the check box for "Load Startup
Items".
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.
F. Try to reinstall the ISA Server 2004.
Suggestion 4:
================
Check if the Last_1st_Nic_Guid and Last_2nd_Nic_Guid are listing the
incorrect adapters. Then you can use the following steps to modify the
registry values to present the correct adapters:
Note: The steps are listed in 'Method 3' in KB '875422 "The wizard cannot
set the DHCP scope options" error message when you -
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875422
a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "regedit", and then click "OK".
b. Locate the following registry subkey, where <{GUID}> is the ID of the
LAN network card:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interf
aces\{GUID}
NOTE: We can review the "DhcpIPAddress" or "IPAddress" registry entries to
determine the correct GUID for the LAN adapter, and then note the GUID.
Make a note of the external network adapter GUID also.
c. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer
d. In the "SmallBusinessServer" subkey, make sure that the value of the
"LANNIC" entry is the GUID of the LAN adapter that you noted in step 2.
e. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Connectivity\ICW
f. In the "ICW" subkey, set the value of the "Last_1st_Nic_Guid" entry to
the LAN adapter GUID that you noted in step 2, and then set the value of
the "Last_2nd_Nic_Guid" entry to the external network adapter GUID that you
noted in step 2.
If the issue persists, please help me collect the following information for
further analyze:
1. What is the exact error message you received when attempting to install
the ISA 2004 server? Please help me capture a screen shot and send to my
working mailbox: v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. Please send me the following log files. My working mailbox:
v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
a. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Support\sbsisa2k4setuplog.txt
b. All files under the folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs
c. Please also send me the ISA setup log, you can refer to this article and
find these log files.
The ISA Server Setup log files
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=837347
3. Besides internal and external NIC, do you have any additional NIC on the
SBS Box? Have the latest driver for those NICs been installed? (Do NOT use
the driver coming with the windows 2003)
4. Go to "Windows Small Business Server 2003" listing in Add/Remove
programs and clicking the change/remove button. The screen which lists the
various components of SBS should have checks all the way down the left
column. If any of the checks are replaced with "---" than that component
didn't get properly updated by SBS SP1.
Hope above information helps. I am happy to be of assistance to you and
look forward to your reply.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

Ran through the notes on "smallbizserver" site for upgrading SBS2003 to
CD.
Windows Server 2003 - Installed OK (rebooted)
Windows Sharepoint Services 2.0 SP 1 - Installed OK
Windows SBS2003 update KB891193 - Installed OK
Exchange SP1 or SP2 - Already installed SP
weeks ago
Windows Small Server 2003 SP 1 - Installed OK (rebooted)
As I have SBS2003 premium, but dont have the full SQL installed, so I then
went on to install ISA2004.
To do this tried to use my Action Pack SBS2003 SP1 Premium Technologies
The installation failed, it looked like it was when it was trying toupdate
the MSDE instances. The error was unhelpful:becuase
"The wizard cannot install ISA Server 2004, Try to install it again by
restarting this wizard..........etc etc"
Re-running it failed again. I then had to re-install ISA2000 again
the failed installation had ripped the guts out of it.2004????
Could the problem have been due to using my Action Pack copy of ISA
or something else??
I really want to get ISA 2004 on the server as I have found problems
publishing a terminal server behind the the SBS2003 (ISA 2000) firewall.
Notes suggest it it quite easy with ISA2004.
However if anyone can help with ISA2000 I'd like to hear comments on that
too!!
Cheers!
karl
