Re: SBS 3003 Premium - 2 NIC w/ Hardware Firewall

Since receiving this I have installed the trial version of ISA 2004 and
configured it correctly I believe. Everyting seems to be working ok except
for my previous RPC over HTTP interface. For some reason that no longer
works, even after trying the steps in Article ID 884506. When I test the
connection from outside the network with outlook /rpcdiag, everything comes
up as TCP/IP.
For that reason, I never connect from outside the network, but I can connect
ok via VPN. Any thoughts on what I'm missing here?

the standard SBS firewall, Standard or Premium doesn't matter unless you.
install ISA, is RRAS and standard Windows based. I expect they may have
borrowed some technology from ISA but to suggest either is 'based on ISA'
would be an incorrect statement.
If you haven't installed ISA you should exclude any thoughts of it from your
mind, or better yet, as a Premium owner you should implement two NICs (I
believe you have) and ALSO install ISA2004.

I didn't install ISA specifically at all - just the default SBS 2003
premium
installation. My understanding is that the built-in software firewall
provided in SBS 2003 Premium is based upon ISA technology. But after
installation, there is not a specific ISA management interface like there
is
with Exchange.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "ISA enhanced firewall"-please define?
Did
you install ISA 2000/2004 in integrated mode or not?

Oh, and by the way - I don't have a full ISA installation going. Just
the
ISA
enhanced firewall that is built into SBS 2003 Premium Edition. No proxy
enabled, etc.

tks Leythos.
I'm a little surprised. I know you prefer one NIC and decent firewall
device, I would have expected you to put forth argument to move to
such a
config, it would seem that the X5 would meet your minimum requirements
to
do
so. (I was almost tempted to suggest it m'self, as a possible
alternative,
but C'MON, I'm an ISA man through 'n' through :-)

In article <#n4hK9zkGHA.3816@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, not@xxxxxxxxxxx
says...
The device itself has VPN endpoint capability, the manual however
also
suggests it supports PPTP passthrough. I mention this because I
don't
know
how well the X5 handles it, it may work perfectly, many VPN capable
devices
interfere with terminating the tunnel at the SBS.
It does PPTP pass-through without any issues, as well as also acting
as
a PPTP server.
If it came down to purchasing a X5 or something else, I would pick
the
D-Link DFL-700 instead - less licensing issues and it does black
lists
by name not IP and offers the same features (although not certified)
as
the X5 but not the limitations on warranty/IP's.
