in any Windows networking 'conversation' (ie. that between two PC's, not
people) two networking components are used
lanmanserver - service name 'server'
lanmanworkstation - service name 'workstation'
The 'workstation' service always talks to the 'server' service, even in a
peer-peer group or between servers. When it does so it acts as a 'client'.
All connections between lanmanserver and lanmanworkstation must be covered
by a CAL. If your 2nd server does not have an assigned SBS CAL by which
licensing do you believe it is covered?

No one pretends to understand licensing, particularly in public : -)
My understanding is that only devices that authenticate to the SBS
require licenses, so IMO a NAS device would not need a device CAL. If
you're on User CALs, then you're definitely all set either way.
I think I have a _modest_ understanding of licensing, so I guess that
makes me "no one"! 8-)
I concur with Dave. In addition, a NAS - pretty much by definition - is
a server device. Notwithstanding denials from certain Microsoft
licensing specialists, Eric Ligman has stated:
- - -
Question: Do member servers themselves require an SBS CAL?
Answer: No. Servers do not require CALs, only physical client Devices
or Users require CALs.

After which he emphasized: "A CAL is a CLIENT access license."
