SBS 2003 Standard Restore from tape

Ok this will sound so ammaturish, but recently i've had a server die on me. I've got another server up and running and here is my delema. I can put a tape in the tape drive and it mounts ok and shows its online. But when i try to catalog the tape it fails to do so every time. It also apears ghosted, unselectable. I really need files off of these tapes but can't seem to get access to them.
I backup religously but this is the first time i've had to restore files and i just can't seem to get it done. I know i'm tired so i might just be missing something right in front of me.
