Re: network drops out every afternoon

I've switched DHCP service and DNS services back on SBS. Router DHCP is now
off. I also switched to using both NICs for this config. One for the LAN and
the other for Internet/router/firewall. I know SBS is happier configured this
way. I am now waiting to see how the LAN connectivity hangs in there. I am
90 miles from this customer but have remote access enabled - I will monitor
and get back to you. Thanks for the suggestions. - Dave

Dave,

I may have missed it but did you say you have DNS also turned off on the SBS
server? If so you will probably want to turn it back on and have all your
client PC's look to SBS for DNS only not the router. I had some similar
setup/issues a while back and here is what I did to fix them.

1) I too had two NIC's with one disabled on SBS server. I enabled the
second one and re-ran CEICW choosing "A direct broadband connection" as
outlined in http://www.12c4pc.com/sbs2k3/sbs2k3-n2.htm (even though I have
"A router with an IP address"). I then connected the internal LAN NIC
connection to the switch with the client PC's. And the external WAN NIC to
the ADSL router. Now the PC's will need to go through the SBS server's
firewall to get out to the Internet (another layer of protection).

2) On my client PC's I made sure that they pointed to the SBS server as the
sole DNS entry.

3) One other thing I did was put the ADSL router onto a different IP scheme.
Now my DSL router uses the 172.16.0.xxx (the SBS WAN connection has this IP
address statically assigned) whereas, my internal LAN is on the
192.168.1.xxx address scheme (this also allows the SBS server to use DHCP as
well as the router which has a built in wireless access point that I use for
visiting accountants) and this gives me separation from a few people that
can use our wireless access to get out to the Internet and still not have
access to our internal network.

Since moving to this scenario it has worked flawlessly. I would like to
point out the reference in #1 above was very helpful in setting this up. I
hope this helps you out.

Thanks for your considerartion --Working at a customer who has SBS2003.
Single NIC used on server with local static IP (but two NICs are avail.
one
is disabled) Each workstation accesses Exchange/Outlook via the server and
Internet via a router. When they loose connection to server, they never
loose
Internet connectivity, but access to the server/Exchange just goes away.
BUT
You can still ping the server! Only a reboot of each workstation allows
each
workstation access back to the server. I've looked at event logs, nothing
coincides with the problem. There are references to DNS in event logs (see
below) but each workstation is DHCP with the router. DHCP and DNS services
are off/stopped on the server. Server has a local static IP. When the
problem
happens they get errors cosistent with a disconnected server (but remember
I
can still ping it) Nothing in the security event log. Here are some of
the
event log messages that may or may not have something to do with this:
they
are listed in order of most to least frequent. NONE of these events
coincide
with when the problem occurs - no events coincide! But it consistently
