Haven't had that but have had a couple of Servers which didn't want to boot
up while they had USB drives connected to them...

I have a couple clients with USB drives for secondary backups, and I've
seen them corrupt files without being disconnected.
I carry a couple 80GB 2.5" USB drives with me, and while I never use the
eject method/option, I always wait for the LED to indicate there is no
activity before I remove them. That said, I've never had a corrupted
file on either of them.
Now for a worse problem - I've seen, personally, USB drives, when being
connected/disconnected BSOD a server or two.
