RE: How to disable automatic creation of network places

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, I understand that you want to disable the automatically add
network place function in Windows SBS server. If I am off base, please feel
free to let me know.

Based on my knowledge, the shortcuts to shared resources are stored in the
%userprofile%\NetHood folder, we can delete all shortcuts files in this
folder. There is a Group Policy setting can be used to prevent the
shortcuts from be added to the My Network Places when you open a document
in the shared folder. Please refer to the following steps to configure this
setting:

1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
2. Navigate to User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Desktop.
3. Enable the "Do not add shares from recently opened documents to the My
Network Places folder" setting.

If this is a domain environment, you may configure this setting in the
appropriate GPO so that it can be applied to the domain users.

Remote shared folders are not added to My Network Places whenever you open
a document in the shared folder. If you disable this setting or do not
configure it, when you open a document in a remote shared folder, the
system adds a connection to the shared folder to My Network Places. If you
enable this setting, shared folders are not added to My Network Places
automatically when you open a document in the shared folder.

I hope the above information helps.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu
