[Important] If the backup media is out of space, the error will also
appear. At this point, I recommend you to use NTBackup instead of SBS
Backup to backup the system. Please also make sure that you've installed
the Hotfix described in KB 839591 and use the /UP switch for ntbackup.

Also, please get a new tape drive and test, does this issue disappear?
