Re: E-Mail Keeps Resending

I'm sorry Steven, I'm afraid I haven't done a very good job getting my
problem across to you.

The SBS server is set to send via DNS and as far as I know except for the
one recipient, all e-mail in and out is working correctly. The problem
occurs with only one recipient and only on outbound mail. When any user in
the SBS network tries to send to the problem recipient (one message and only
one recipient), the e-mail gets queued for delivery and in fact gets
delivered, but the message stays in the queue and keeps resending to the
recipient. The recipient is reporting that she gets multiple copies of the
same message (40 or 50 copies of each message). It's like the server on the
other end never notifies our server that it received the message. How can I
go about troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks again,

Lesa

Hi,

Thanks for your new information.

First of all, please make sure that you have installed the following fix:

835734 Many unexpected outbound e-mail messages appear in the SMTP queue
in
Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=835734

If this issue persists with this fix, the problem is generally caused
because the ISP "expand" that piece of e-mail. If you send one piece of
e-mail to "user1" and "user2" in the same To field, some ISP will keep
that
as a single piece of e-mail, or some will expand that as two. If you use
telnet and connect to the ISP, you may see two piece of e-mail with the
exact same size.

When POP3 connector downloads the e-mails, it sees two e-mails because you
do have two. First e-mail contains user1 and user2, and second e-mail
contains user1 and user2 also. That''s why you see multiple e-mail
messages. To avoid the problem, check with the ISP and not expand the
e-mail, or switch to individual mailbox, or use SMTP instead.

I would suggest you perform the following tests:

1. Send an e-mail to A@xxxxxxxx & B@xxxxxxxx, use the following steps to
check the e-mail on the POP3 server.

A. Bring up a command console and issue the following commands

telnet
set local_echo
open <POP3 server Internet IP> 110 ;REM such as "open
157.60.71.8".
User <User name> ;REM such as "User A"
Pass <User Password>
Stat

B. You will then get the output in the format "+OK <e-mail number>
<Return command>". For example, if it is "+OK 3 375", it means you have 3
e-mails in the mailbox.

C. Issue LIST, then you will see every e-mail with corresponding size
information. Such as:

1 123
2 123
3 129

D. Do you see duplicated e-mails in account A?

2. Use POP3 connector to retrieve the e-mails from another POP3 server; do
you receive the duplicated e-mails?

3. If you use a POP3 application as Outlook Express to download the emails
from the POP3 server, does this issue occur?

For more information, please refer to the following article:
264249 Exchange Server Connector for POP3 Mailboxes deliver multiple
copies
of messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=264249

Please check the above and then let me know the results. If anything is
unclear, please feel free to let me know. I look forward to hearing from
you.

Have a good day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu
