Re: SBS2003 Firewall Config with 2 Adapters

I have to back up both my mate Jan and Steve here.
255.255.whatever is a 'subnet mask', the mask and network address determine
the subnet. In Daren's original config both network adapters are in the
192.168.5.0 network with a 24 bit mask (255.255.255.0), they are in the same
subnet.
Steve raises the point that wireless is probably not the best way to connect
a server to anything (or did he just say 'internet'), doesn't matter much, I
DO NOT USE:
Wireless networking.
USB networking.
on servers, both are 'workstation' 'convenience' technology and neither are
stable enough for server use.
Replace the 'external' wireless nic with a real one, put it into a different
subnet than your internal network (by changing one or the other, HINT: It's
easy to change the internal) and most of your problems should disappear.

No. You are talking about mask, you need to change subnet eg from
192.168.5.x to 192.168.10.x

Hey Jan
Thanks for that...
Does that mean changing 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0 for example and
can I
do that on the LAN side rather than the ISP.

The problem is that both NICs are in the same subnet. Change external to
different subnet and run Connect to Internet wizard from to do list.

I am tearing my hair out here, I am certain it is a simple task but I
just
can't get it to work.
The SBS has 2 adapters, I have one configured as DHCP
(192.168.5.x/255.255.255.0) to connect to the ISP/Router. The other
is
the
"Server Local Area Connection" configured with a static IP address
(192.168.5.25/255.255.255.0). With this config I can see out to the
internet
from the server but nothing can see in even with all the internal
ports
open
through the SBS Firewall.
The ISP adapter (DHCP IP) is wireless and connectes to the router.
The
LAN
(Static IP) adapter is wired to a switch for the clients.
This is before I configure the DHCP Server in the SBS for the clients.
By
the way is there any way to set this to defaults or do I need to fully
configure this too?
This is how the diagram explains it so what am I doing incorrect
somebody
please?
Regards
Daren
I must be doing something wrong.
