When you do it, include a ( hot ) spare in your budget and have it the
rack - or at least onsite.
Any future failure would be a simple scheduled swap - then order another
spare

I agree he should just image the server using an appropriate WinPE
disk, wipe the array, create and initialize a new array (and allow the
ServeRAID to completely scrub the drives), then restore the image....
A bad stripe isn't the result of a single drive failure....something
caused at least two drives in the same horizontal stripe to fail.
Usually a bad stripe develops because the server is run for an
extended period of time with the logical drive in a critical state
(i.e. a drive has failed in the RAID5 array).
"The ServeRAID controller is designed to handle and correct a single
stripe unit failure on a read or a write-verify. If two or more stripe
units within the same horizontal stripe across the array fail at the
same time for any reason, all stripe units within that stripe will
become blocked, creating a bad stripe table entry in the hosted
logical drives configuration. "
I really suggest looking over the following document on IBM's support
site :
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-57140&selectarea=SUPPORT&tempselected=5
"If the condition that is conducive to the creation of bad stripes is
not corrected first", this may happen all over again.....

I'd perform both an ASR backup and a full system backup, then ASR restore

You don't wish to image the system but you seem to be asking for a way to
restore it fully to it's current state, why not just image the sucker?
And as the 'stripe' on RAID 5 is held across all disks I'm not really sure
where you're going here either. If it's a faulty drive replace it and
rebuild the array. In this context the 'rebuild' takes the existing data
and
rebuilds what is missing. If IBM are suggesting that a single drive
failure
in a RAID5 array requires more drastic action I'd be looking to replace
the
RAID controller (and possibly the server, returning it for full refund as
it
is 'unfit for intended purpose').

Our IBM x235 running ServeRAID 6 with 3 disks in a RAID 5 configuration
has started showing an error about a corrupt RAID stripe. The IBM
engineer
has confirmed our thinking - that the array will need to be rebuilt,
meaning that the OS will have to be reinstalled.
We dont want to restore a disk image, but then again we don't want to
have
to set everything up from scratch again. At present we use Arcserve for
backups, but it only backs up data (files and email).
Bearing in ming that the server is running fine at the moment -what is
the
best method of backing up and restoring as much as possible - e.g.
Active
Directory, Exchange options and data, directory structure and
permissions.
Thanks in advance.
