There are no child folders and the files are writeable.

Under the 'Security' tab - have you clicked on 'Advanced' and replaced the permission entries on all child objects?.
With the 'read only' thing, you'll probably find that some of the files/folders within the folder in question are read only and this is why it keeps returning.

I don't know exactly how SBS works - but I know which button to press to *make* it work.

How do I get folder sharing to work?
I'm trying to share a folder on my workstation. I create it, right-click Sharing, and enable sharing. I give permissions to Users on the Security tab. On the General tab, Read-only is checked and I uncheck it. Hit Ok. Other workstations can now see the folder, but can't modify it. I go back to the General tab and Read-only has been magically turned back on. I can't see to turn it off permanently.
This workstation is part of an SBS domain.
