Re: Cannot attach to SBS netowrk - can't attah to domain - HELP!

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

SBS licenses can be installed as per user or per device. In most cases, per
user is desirable, as it allows each user to connect in from a multidude of
solutions (desktop, remote laptop, pocket pc, etc.) Per device is most
useful (in my opinion) if a business has shift workers that use the same
computers (John works on a PC from 7a-3pm, and Sally uses it from 3p-10p).

Don't tell anyone (just between you and me, and I know no one else is
reading this email), the ability for SBS to track license usage is horrible,
at best. I can suggest to you that SBS does have a fudge factor built in, so
I don't believe that's your problem.

In theiry, your setup should "just work". The only thing I don't see that
you've done is to run the connectcomputer wizard from your laptop to have it
join the domain. But that's not required for you to "see" the server. Any
chance someone has tweaked the Netgear box and restricted access based on
MAC address?

does the SBS server have one NIC or two? are the other PC's connected

it sure sounds like to me you may have two NIC's , and the PC's are
attached to the second NIC.

from the server, issue the following command: ipconfig /all --- and post
the result back here

Hi Kevin.

the SBS does have two NIC cards, but only one is attached. The other has
nothing attached to it. The onlything the Server is attached to is the
actual Netgear Router / Firewall (FVX538 to be precise)

I'll draw out the picture exactly:
*) Two modems are attached to the Netgear router/firewall/vpn etc all in
one device. Two modems for rollover on failure of one and these are
attached to the two WLAN ports.
*) A Dell SBS 2003 server is attached to the main Gigabit Ethernet port on
the Netgear (the nextgear only has on Gigabit port the others are 10/100
ports).
*) All of the office PC's and printers are attached to Netgear on the
10/100 Ethernet ports (note I believe one of the ports is connected to
another 5 port switch which actually goes through to another room where
there are more PC's attached). In total about 6 PC's and 3 printers)

*) All I did was directly attach my laptop to one of the free ports on the
Netgear device (I tried changing free port I was using with no effect), so
it should be no differently attached to the other PC's on the network
(which all work fine- as in they can ping the server and get internet
connection ands use server resources).

Right now I am not in the office so I am unable to do the ipconfig /all
from the server but I will be going in again later today and will do this
as I need to get to the bottom of this before Monday.

Any thoughts in the meantime more then welcome. Just out of interest if
you exceed the number of licences available in your installation of SBS,
would this exhibit the behaviour I am experiencing?
Without wanting to go on a tangent, how does the licensing thing work,
does it count the attached PCs or User accounts

Thanks again.
