Re: SBS Backup Problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Mart,

Thanks for your update. I am glad to know that things are getting fine now.
I appreciate your time and effort to try my suggestions and get this
resolved.

And also I will report your feedback to the appropriate channel to improve
the productions.

Here's a summary of this post for your reference:

PROBLEM: the SBS backup runner failed to backup and received error message
"Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Unknown error. There may be a hardware or media problem."

RESOLUTION: Increase the session timeout value by adding the registry key
SessTimeout and increasing the value to 300 in the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup to resolve the issue.

Please do not hesitate to post in this great newsgroup if you need any
assistance in the future. We are glad to help.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

hi jenny
just thought i would let you know i have had 2 successfull backups!
i set it up using the wizard using the ip address of my network drive.
i set up the sesstimeout key to 300 secs. i am pretty convinced that
the timeout key sovled the problem. i always thought it was just timing
out finding the disc to begin the transfer of the files. so thank you
very much. you should tell the wizard programmers to set that into
their program.
i also disabled my little ping bat file that i used to wake up the
disc. so the wizzard and the timeout setting did it all by itself.
i know its too early to say for certain that all is ok but i am feeling
more positve.
cheers and thanks
mart

Hi Mart,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time.

The SessTimeout key should be under the node of:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup

If there is not the registry key list here, please create it under the
node.

Based on my test, we can use IP address and UNC path with Ntbackup
utility.

Q: does dhcp get stopped during backup?
A: the DHCP server will not stop.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have further question on the
issue. We are glad to help.

hi Jenny,
sorry for delay. other work interveened
i will try the clean boot at weekend when nobody about.
the reg key is not there! no trace of SessTimeout?
where should i put it?
in which folder?
could this be the problem?
also when telling the wizard where to put the bks file, would it help
to use an ip address or the unc address it fills in for you?
i.e. \\192.168.16.135\backup\backup files\
does dhcp get stopped during backup?
i saw on the backupassist site that mapped drives are best for network
drives like mine, but the wizard does not except them. does ntbackup
except them?
oh well keep trying, only another ten years before i retire!
cheers mart

Hi Mart,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your efforts to the issue.

I. Let us first check the following settings to trouble shoot the
issue:

1. Please open Scheduled Tasks folder (Start -> Control panel ->
Scheduled
Tasks), right click the SBS backup task to open its Properties page.

2. Under Settings tab, please ensure do NOT check all options here.

3. Then please restart the backup service and then test the issue
again.
What is the result?

II. If the issue persists, let us perform the clean boot respectively
on
the SBS server box and on the NAS data center to see it the issue
disappears.

A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs
that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other
device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.

1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically
during
start-up.)
4) Restart the computer and check whether the problem still persists.

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is
related
to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG
tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the
culprit.

III. If the issue persists, please check the following registry key
and
verifying it to see if it helps.

Please open Registry Editor, navigate to the Registry Key "Ntbackup"
located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup. What is the
value
of the SessTimeout key? Please set the SessTimeout key to 300. Then
please
test the issue and let me know the result.

IV. To your solution to workaround the issue, we need program a
script to
implement the task automatically. For how to code a script to achieve
the
aim, you need post the question in our MSDN newsgroup. The developer
newsgroups are located at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp. They are more
professional than us in this field. Thank you for your understanding.

And also please let me know what the bandwidth of your LAN network
is. I
appreciate your time!

Have a nice day!
