RE: Restore Mailbox

Hi Alex,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, I understand that you want to know how to restore the
mailbox for the users from the old disk. If I am off base, please feel free
to let me know.

First of all, it's highly not recommended and supported to restore Exchange
databases by using a disk image. Actually we recommend use Windows Backup
utility (ntbackup) to back up and restore Exchange databases. Moreover,
your recovery method is not feasible since you cannot put on your unused
server (we call it recovery server) to your production environment because
it will destroy the Active Directory (AD) database which is required by
your production Exchange server to run properly.

However, if you still want to use the disk image to restore your Exchange
Server, you first have to set up a new AD domain with the same
configuration as the production environment on a separate network. Then you
can reinstall the recovery server by the disk image and join the simulated
environment. After this, you may finally use Exmerge to extract the
mailboxes to .PST files. However, this method is not supported by
Microsoft. Instead, we recommend you use the methods described in the
following Knowledge Base article to fulfill the task:

How To Recover or Restore a Single Mailbox in Exchange 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813337

For additional information about how to backup and restore the Exchange
database, please refer to the following Knowledge Base article:

How to Back Up and Restore an Exchange Computer by Using the Windows Backup
Program
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;258243

I hope the above information helps.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu
