Re: Adding DNS records to stroseparish.local

That does sound like it would work. Thanks! But your last comment leads me to
my originial question. How do I add an A and MX record? I haven't seen
anywhere in the properties of smtp or the connectors to add these. So I'm
assuming we would add these settings as NAT in the DNS tables. Would you
please provide a knowledgebase or directions specifically? Thanks Again! I
appreciate everything! Julie

You need to distinguish between the registered domain name and your web site
which would be www.stroseparish.info. Your e-mail is totally separate from
your web site. Your Exchange Server will then be setup (the CEICW will do
this) to use the stroseparish.info domain name strictly for e-mail purposes.
So no new domain name is required as you already have the pieces you need.
For incoming SMTP mail an A and MX record needs to be in place (with your
domain DNS host) that point to the external IP address you're using.

Hi Steve; thanks for the questions. I hope to explain clearly. We have a
registered domain name of stroseparish.info but it is hosted offsite. I
currently do not have a registered domain name for our internal network.
Is
it possible to use the registered domain we already have, but wouldn't
that
route email to the outside host? If I am understanding you correctly, i
would have to create a registered domain and then change the entire
sharepoint/internal web settings for this to take effect and allow us to
send
email out? it's really getting deep now. ;-) sigh... thanks again,
Julie

What is your actual registered domain name? .local is your internal and
not
valid on the internet. Also does sbcglobal actually use yahoo.com as
you're
showing?

Hi Cris; I did as you suggested and ran the ICW to choose DSN routing.
I
restarted the routing and smtp services and tried sending email out.
The
email comes back undelivered with the following error (There was a smtp
communication problem with the recipeients email server,
<stroseparish.local
#5.5.0 smtp:553 #5.1.8 domain of sending address
<tech-1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
does not resolve.>

I called SBC support and they said I would have to have authentication
and
routing to their smtp server. So I changed the connection again to
smtp
routing (smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com [68.142.229.41] with authentication.

Now when i send email out. It seems to go off in neverland and doesn't
get
delivered. the queues are empy and there seems to be no other
problems.
Now
I'm really stuck, What else can i do? SBC suggested calling their
teir 2
support but it is fee based, being a catholic parish, there is no
budget
for
outside support. I really need some direction here. Thanks, I
appreciate
everything so far and look forward to your next post.

Hi Chris; Thanks for your post! We are on a company dsl account. I
have not
tried going straight to dns. I have reviewed the settup but there
were
a few
areas that I was unsure of. If I change just the connector vertual
service
and the smtp connector to route to the dns settings of my nic that
should
work? Do I have to populate the external domain settings also? That
in
particular I wasn't sure of. Thanks again, looking forward to your
response.
