Re: DHCP reservation question/problem

is the introduction of the IP phones a new project or did these previously work and now they don't
Is there some reason not to assign static IP's to the phones??

yes the nic card has the 10.0.0.x on it and under advanced 10.0.1.x.

the dsl and t1 both plug into our ns25 and that handes the firwall, routing and so on.

Ok but does your nic on the internal network have a 10.0.0.X and 10.0.1.X address? And if you do this...its going to cause you issues.
Domain Controllers do not do well with multiple IPs

How are your DSL and T1 connected to the network?

Hello

On my SBS I am running the DHCP server. In there I setup a super scope. In
this super scope I have two ranges 10.0.0.x and 10.0.1.x. I don't need that
many IP addresses but this was how we decided to separate out the phone and
data traffic. The 10.0.1.x network is for the phones and all that traffic
goes out on our T1 while the 10.0.0.x network is for web and goes out on the
DSL.

Any way here is the problem I am having. I am trying to add some new phones
to the 10.0.1.x reservations and for whatever reason it is not working.
When the phones boot up the sit on Waiting for network to initialize
forever. I even left one sitting in this mode over the weekend just to see
if it would ever come back and it did not. If I don't setup a reservation
on the DHCP server the phones log onto the DHCP server just fine and get
assigned a 10.0.0.x network address.

I cannot figure out why the phones are unable to get their assigned IP
address from the server. At first I thought there may be a problem with the
server so restarted it. Then just to see I took one of the phones that has
been up and working for months and reset it to its default settings.
Meaning it had to log back on, update settings and gets its IP address all
over again. This works fine. As I started testing this more I pulled out a
phone that I had unplugged months ago and plugged it in. It too was able to
get its IP address from the DHCP server. So I know the server is working
and if the reservation was already setup it works. I then took one of the
working phones and removed it's reservation in the 10.0.1.x network and
setup one in the 10.0.0.0 network and that worked fine. Then I deleted
the 10.0.0.x reservation and created a 10.0.1.x reservation and again the
phone got its IP address just fine. Just to make sure was not restoring old
information I even assigned the phone a new IP on the 10.0.1.x net.
That too worked.

While trouble shooting this I had a phone sitting on the waiting for network
to initialize screen while I was working on its reservation on the DHCP
server. I deleted the reservation to try something else and I noticed the
phone booted. So I know the phone is reaching the DHCP server and is
sitting and looking at that reservation but for some reason it does not move
on. The last thing I tried and basically what I am using as a workaround
while I try to figure out why the DHCP reservations are not working is I
just assign the IP address to the phone manually. This works but is not
what I want. I would like to have the phones get their IP address from my
DHCP server.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lee
