Re: What is a MSDE instance and where can I find it?

Hello Dave,

A delayed reply indeed but I just wanted to say thank you for answering my
query. I have since successfully installed the service pack on the server.

Thanks again for your assistance with this.

MSDE instances look just like SQL instances. In Services, they're the ones
that have names like MSSQL$SHAREPOINT and MSSQL$SBSMONITORING. The part
after the $ is the instance name.

You didn't move data from one instance to another without knowing it, so I'd
just go ahead and install the SP with the defaults from the M&Ms article
you've already found.

Hello all,

I am reviewing the "How to install Service Pack 1 for SBS 2003" document
from Smallbizserver (by Mariette Knap) and there is a section on things to
do
on the server before the install and I have a question about one point
raised.

Below, they talk about an MSDE instanced called Sharepoint. Can someone
please let me know where I can find this "instance" or perhaps the
"mycompany" instance. I know - probably a silly question and I'm sure I
did
not move data from this instance to "mycompany" but I just want to confirm
this.

Thanks so much! :-)
Tammy

SECTION 3.0
If you have previously installed Sharepoint services as a part of Small
Business Server 2003 you will notice that there is a MSDE instance called
'Sharepoint'. If you have decided that you needed to move the data inside
this instance to an instance called 'MyCompany' and after this you have
deleted the Sharepoint instance, the SP1 installer will report an error
but
at the end of the installation sequence it will report that the install
was
successfull. However, the installation will not have completed
succesfully.
No MSDE instance will be upgraded to Service Pack 4 and other unexpected
things can occur.
The solution or workaround
Before you install SBS SP1 uninstall the Intranet from the SBS setup and
reinstall it. This will create a default Sharepoint instance and set the
Companyweb to the Sharepoint instance. Be sure to backup your old SQL
instance before doing this.
