RE: Remote Access

Thanks for that link...

.... I have read the info for the systems the hotfix is related to, call me
stupid but where is says MS Server 2003 sp1 does that apply to SBS 2003 as
well?

The hotfix does sound like it's in the right direction for the problems I
was having!

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate your time and efforts to the issue. I
am back now and I am sorry for bring inconvenience for my leaving.

Based on my research, the error message occurs due to the port 4125 is
blocked. Let us perform the following tests to analyze the issue:

1. How many network adapter you installed on the SBS server box?

2. If there are two network adapters installed, please try to connect to
one laptop to the external NIC and configure settings as follows:

a. Set the SBS external IP address as the gateway of the laptop.

b. Please Logon the SBS server box and open Windows Explorer, navigate to
\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc directory and open the hosts file. In the
Open With dialog box, select Notepad and click OK. Let's manually add the
following entry to the bottom of the file:

192.168.1.x (ExternalIP of the SBS server) PublicFQDN

Here 192.168.1.x is the IP address of the external NIC of the SBS Server,
please replace it with the real one. ENSURE that you press ENTER after you
add this line to the hosts file to ensure that there is an empty line at
the end of the file.

After doing so, we will have the host file as the following sample:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.a webmail.gwrr.com

Then please logon the RWW site and connect to server box or any
workstations to test, what is the result?

3. Please ensure the Symantec firewall does not block the port 4125. At
this time, please perform a clean boot on the server box to see if it
helps.

A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that
are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device
drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.
1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE.
2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".
3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
4) Restart the computer and check whether the problem still persists.

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

4. If the issue persists, I would like to suggest that you re-run CEICW to
refresh the network connection to isolate the issue.

After re-run CEICW, please double check if the RWW site work file internal
(Please try to connect to the LAN computers from multiple PCs to test) and
external (Please try to connect to the LAN computers from multiple
internet
PCs in different network places).

Then please reboot the server and then test the issue again, how about the
result. If the issue persists, please help me collect the ipconfig/all,
NetDiag and route print results on both server and remote computer as
following:

Open a command prompt, type the following command:

''netdiag /v > c:\netdiag.txt'' (without the quotation marks) and press
Enter
"route print > c:\route.txt"
"Ipconfig/all > c:\ipconfig.txt"

Also please enable IIS logging and reproduced the issue (access the RWW
site and connect to one LAN computer) and collect IIS log:

To enable IIS log:

a. Open IIS MMC, right click Default Web Site and then click Properties.
b. Click Website tab and then check Enable logging.
c. Stop the Default Website and rename the existing IIS log files under
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles.
d. Restart the Default Website and try Server Activesync to reproduce the
problem.
e. Wait about 15 minutes, then go to the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles and send them to me.

I appreciate your time and cooperation. I am glad to be of assistance to
you-).

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Hi & Thanks for your reply,

I do have a router connected to the internet <-> SBS server and port 4125
is
forwarded to the server. (I have done this manually but as it is a PnP
router
it does give me the option to run the wizard and let it do it for me, I
have
tried with and without the wizard with the same result)

I have run "netstat -aon | find ":4125"" on the server and I get no
response, I have tested the command on other ports and on"*" and I do get
a
response (I see the port open and the corresponding PID)

As for XPsp2 I have reconfigured the pop up blocker so as it does not
block
pop-ups, this had no effect.

I have also had the same connection issue on an XP Home box.

The network topology is thus:

_ Remote client PCs have been both XP Pro sp2 and XP Home with the same
result.
_ Firewall/Router is Netgear DG834 v2 Connected to Netgear FS524 Switch
_ No ISA
_ SBS 2003 Standard sp1
_ Simple LAN environment, DHCP is SBS, 9 terminals all running XP Pro
sp2

RWW & RDC are fine from on the lan using http://servername/remote but
when
remotely connecting to http://*.*.*.*/remote it will connect to RWW but
the
connection to ALL desktops is intermittant.

By intermittant I mean that if I run the "connect to the internet" wizard
on
the SBS box it will work, but after an undetermined amount of time it
will
no
longer allow connections to desktops and servers, displaying the error
message in SOLONYs previous post.

I can only assume that this problem has been from the beginning, as I
only
recently set up RWW and have noticed the problem, no software has been
installed since setup, current major packages include:
_ Exchange 2003 sp1
_ Symantec Mail Security for MS exchange
_ Symantec Client Secuity
_ Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
_ GFI Mail Essentials V12

Rest is standard stuff.

Thanks for your time,

Chris

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting back!

It is Brandy here. Since Jenny is taking leave so I will work on this
issue
with you.

I understand that after you reboot SBS Server, you cannot RWW and then
RDP
to domain computer desktops. If I have misunderstood your concern,
please
let me know.

From the error message, most of the issue is caused by the inbound TCP
port
4125 is blocked. So I suggest that you check the following things:
