Re: SBS Outlook Web Access attachment

Hi Chace,

It is on XP laptop workstation we're working in OWA. The server is SBS
20003 with SBS SP1, Exchange SP2.

So there's no way for OWA on XP workstation to prompt us what we want to do
anymore unless we delete the entry in the registry? Is that deleting the
entry from the workstation or the server?

Thanks,
Helen

Hi Helen,

Thanks for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that there is no option when
you click attachments via OWA. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me
know.

Firstly, please ask the following questions to clarify the problem.

What is the version of your windows server?

What is the version of your exchange server?

Based on my research, I found after applying SP3 for Exchange, there is a
change in the way OWA handles attachment. Prior to SP2 users would see the
box pop up "open, save, cancel, more info". After applying SP2 when
opening
xls,.doc, and others they get a pop up "This attachment must be saved to
disk. Right click the link and save from the menu. With a single-button
mouse, hold the button down over the link then save from the menu" and the
only option is OK. The attachment is in the attachment well
Different types of attachments have different behavior. Text documents
open
fine from either link.

There is a reference to registry values that control the behavior of OWA
attachments:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWEB\OWA\Level2MimeTypes
and Level2FileTypes

The force-save attachment dialog can be controlled through the use of the
regkeys Level2FileType or Level2MimeTypes.

This is by design for security reasons this was added in SP2 to avoid any
type of destructive code being downloaded. The goal of this change is to
prevent users from having the browser execute content that the Exchange
content engine cannot filter.

Deleting the Level2MimeTypes and Level2FileTypes will allow all office
attachments to prompt with the choice of opening or saving or cancelling.
They no longer force users to save to disk. But this will disable the
attachment filtering capabilities.

So we do not suggest you manually delete the regedit key due to security
reasons.

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Chace Zhang (MSFT)
