Backup Assistance Needed

All:

I have a strange problem; I just installed a Windows 2003SBS for a client.
They are a shop of three computers and not much data to backup. They elected
to use an external 80 GB hard drive to backup and keep 5 iterations.
Everything was working well up to May 23rd. Nothing has been changed to the
best of my knowledge, nothing added and nothing deleted.

It appears the server hangs when the backup is copying files for the system
state. The server stops and appears to lock. The only way to reset is to
power off.

I've tried other external drives with the same results.

Ideas?
