Hi Steve,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
From the description, I understand the issue to be: You can not create VPNto SBS from a home PC. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.
To narrow down the problem, would you please help me confirm if you create
VPN following the below steps or manually create VPN to SBS from My Network
Places?
1. On the home PC, go to https://publicFQDN/remote, clear I'm using a
public or shared computer, log in and download Connection Manager.
2. Install Connection Manager on the VPN client.
Can you RDP to SBS directly through click Start and Accessories and
Communications and Remote Desktop Connection?
Please check the following steps to see how thing goes:
1. Check if there are connection limitations on SBS server:
1) Open Routing and Remote Access.
2) Expand Server name and then click Remote Access Policies.
3) Right click Small Business Remote Access Policy in the right pane and
select Properties.
4) On settings tab, click Edit Profile.
5) On the "Dial-in Constraints" tab, check if you have configured the
timeout value through checking Minutes client can be connected (Session
Timeout).
6) Check if you have selected Allow access only to this number
(Called-Station-ID).
2. Check if you have allowed remote access permission for the account you
are using on the problematic client:
1) Right click the user account and then select Properties on SBS.
2) On Dial-in tab, does the user have the "Allow Access" permission and
check if you have selected "Control access through Remote Access Policy"
3. Make sure that you have selected Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and the
Computer Browser service on problematic computer as following:
1) Right click My Network Places and select Properties.
2) Right click Local Area Connection (client computer)/Network Connection
(server) and select Properties.
3) Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and high light it. Click Properties.
4) On the General tab, click Advanced. Go to WINS tab.
5) Make sure that you select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
6) Click OK twice and close all the windows.
4. Please disable ICF in your problematic computer. To do so:
1) Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
2) Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections.
3) Right-click the connection that you use for the Internet, and then click
Properties.
4) Click the Advanced tab.
5) Click to clear the "Protect my computer and network by limiting or
preventing access to this computer from the Internet" check box.
For detailed information, please refer to the following KB article:
298804 Internet firewalls can prevent browsing and file sharing
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=298804
5. On the Windows XP SP2 workstation, please uninstall any third-party
antivirus and firewall program.
If the problem still occurs, please help me collect the following
information:
1. Is the problematic computer located in the LAN of SBS or remote location?
2. Is there any difference between the problematic computer and other
clients? Are they using Windows XP SP2?
3. Can you create VPN using other accounts or Administrator on the PC?
4. Can you create VPN using the same account to SBS on other PC?
For managing the Windows XP SP2 firewall under SBS network, you may also
need the following article

I appreciate you taking time to gather the above information. If you have
any questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know. I look forward
to your reply!
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| We have a SBS 2003, Our desktop PCs are Windows XP Professional.
|
| I set up a VPN connection which I have got working previously, however
| when i uninstalled SP2 on my home PC and re-installed it and tried to
| create a new connection put in my credentials and click Connect. It
| finds our firewall IP address but fails with the message:
|
| Windows was unable to connect to the network using the user name and
| password you provided. Please re-enter the user name and password"
|
| I checked on our domain controller to see if there were any entries in
| the event log, but none were found its as if it never got that far. My
| only other thought is a firewall. But as i say it worked before. My
| other colleagues who have had their VPN connection a while have no
| problems getting in, it seems any new connections just come up with
| authentication problems. At work I have the same connection test on my
| work pc and it works fine (its been there a while). I'm thinking it may
| be some security patch for windows that has been installed which
| prevents it working?
|
| I have diabled the firewall on the desktop to see if that makes any
| difference, but nothing.
|
| I think our rules on our firewall are ok because it works for other
| colleagues. Some people have trouble creating a new VPN on their own
| internal PC's linked to the domain.
|
| Anyone any ideas? I'm going on holiday tomorrow and need to make sure i
| can help my colleagues so i need a VPN connection.
|
| We have Windows XP SP2 with all the current update.
|
| Thanks in advance
|
