Hey Crina,
I have a similar problem but none of your suggestions here have worked for
me. I have a branch office with 6 users that I am setting up to use Terminal
Server. 4 of the 6 users had no problem installing activex and they now have
access to the Terminal Server through RWW. The other 2 users received the
message about IE not allowing the installation of Activex and shows a problem
with the msrdp.cab file. As I said I tried your suggestions in this post but
nothing worked for me.

Hi J,.
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
According to your post, I understand that when you select a computer in RWW
page to connect to, it prompts that "Your browser's security settings may
be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls" If I am off-base on
that, please let me know.
As I know, when you select or click Connect to connect to the machine, the
browser is going to attempt to download a Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX
control from the server to the client. That's going to be if the client
does not already have it installed. The actual file that is downloading is
located under the %systemroot%\Inetpub\Remote directory, and it is called
Msrdp.cab. After it is installed, it will be installed to the client under
whatever their Windows directory is, %windir%\Downloaded Program
Files\Microsoft RDP Client Control.
If the control cannot be downloaded, you are going to be returned to the
main menu with the following error. It will say, "This portion of the
Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX control.
Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading the
ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again." That is
a signal to maybe check some of the security settings in Internet Explorer.
Please try the following steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
2. Click the Security tab, select Internet and click Custom Level.
3. Select Prompt or Enable for Download signed ActiveX controls and
Download unsigned ActiveX controls.
4. Click OK. Restart IE and have a test.
5. Clear IE cache on internet client:
Open Internet Explorer. Click 'Tools'->'Internet Options'. In 'General'
tab, click 'Delete files' and 'Delete cookies' buttons. Will the issue be
resolved?
6. Please try to add http://servername to the IE Intranet zone of the
problematic client computers and try again. You can do so as following:
To add the site to the Trusted sites zone on the problematic client
computer:
1) Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already running).
2) On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3) Click the Security tab.
4) Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click
Trusted sites, and then click Sites.
5) In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://servername, and
then click Add.
6) Click Close, and then click OK.
7) Try to see if the problem still persists.
Please note that you need to be a local admin to install Active X controls.
I recommend logging in as an admin, installing the ActiveX control, then
logging in as the regular user to use the RWW or anything else.
This issue may also occur if the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"
feature in Internet Explorer on the client is disabled. If this is the
case, follow the steps to fix the issue:
1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
2. Click the Advanced tab. Scroll to the bottom. In the Security section,
click to check the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" check box.
3. Click OK.
4. Click OK. Restart IE and have a test.
If you could reproduce this issue on every client workstations, you may
also refer to the following information.
1. In the IIS MMC right-click the server (servername (local computer)) and
choose properties.
2. Click the MIME Types button and verify if .cab is there.
3. If .cab is not there, click the New button.
4. In the Extension box, type .cab.
5. In the MIME Type box, type application/octet-stream.
6. Click OK to close all the dialog windows and then click Apply to apply
the changes.
7. Run IISRESET.
Hope it helps.
I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hello,
|
| I have posted in another thread, but as a follow-up. I'm hoping a new
post
| might lead to a solution.
|
| We have a recent install of SBS 2003 SP1 on our network. All
workstations
| XP Pro.
|
| I have been having problems with Remote Desktop through the Remote Web
| Workplace. I continually receive the error "This portion of the Remote
Web
| Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX control. Your
| browsers security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX
| controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again." There is no
| yellow bar prompting for install of an ActiveX control.
|
| This does NOT appear to be the well known spyware ActiveX kill bit reg
key
| problem. I have checked each workstation tested for the kll bit reg key.
|
| I can duplicate this from any workstation on the LAN. With, and without
AV
| running. With and without anti-spyware running. I have checked for the
kill
| bit reg key on 3 different workstations, and have not found it. I have
even
| tested this from a BRAND NEW install on XP on a different workstion. All
of
| these have the same problem.
|
| I have tried lowering security settings to their lowest levels in IE. I
| have also enabled all automatic downloading and prompting.
|
| I have used two systems that weren't part of our domain, to remove GP as
a
| possible problem.
|
| I have manually installed the RPD ActiveX client using Microsoft's
| installer. This should have eliminated the ActiveX portion of the
problem
| since RDP through RWW is supposed to check for the contol and not
download it
| if found.
|
| At this point, the problem still occurs.
|
| What I can do:
| I CAN connect to any system on the LAN from the SBS server itself by
using
| RDP through RWW.
| I can connect to any workstation from the server by directly using RDP.
| I can connect back from the workstations to the server by directly using
RDP.
| I was able to log in to RWW and check OWA.
|
| At this point, I'm out of resources for ideas of things to check, not
even a
| clue. Short of the venerable old, wipe it and reload it. Which is a bit
of
| a distasteful idea.
|
| J
