I'm personally not in favour of a prep course if it alone can make the difference between pass and fail.
But I do agree that any prep course that doesn't seem to reference the skills to be examined might not be good value. Who provided the course?

Nothing is as valuable as real world experience. I've been in IT for over 10 yrs and haven't bothered with certifications before, now unfortunately they're becoming a necessity in Oz, of course there's always your way and the MS way.
But when you send people to do a MS approved course that's designed to prepare (note I say prepare) you for the exam and use so-called recommended software that's again supposed to prepare you, they could at least base it on some of the examinable material. Nowhere in my practice exams were any questions remotely close to SQL or exchange migrations so now for all our new junior technicians who don't have as much experience as myself and the other Technical Director, we have to expose them to exchange and sql even though chances are they won't be used very much, if at all.

I sat this exam on the weekend just gone, after having done the MS course
last November, using the Self Test Software to practice and was doing fine
(averaging over 90% in ST), the exam was absolutely nothing like the
practice exam I had seen, in fact I think I recognised only 1 question that
was even remotely close.
Don't take this wrong, but I think it's great that the training/books
are nothing like the actual test - it's about time that MS stopped
allowing cram sessions/classes to make up for real experience.
I stopped counting the MCSE/Certs from MS as an indicator of any
technical merit long ago - and I've seen people with 5 or 6 MS Certs on
their business card that should never be permitted near a network let
alone a computer.
If you don't have experience to guide you then you should not pass the
test.

You said the practice software is about 6 months old? don't know when you took the course but my understanding is the exam has been "updated" in the last couple months
Could be outdated practice software and course ware
